It's been a few years since we've had an acoustic album by Medeski Martin & Wood. This is a collection of live material, as with its acoustic predecessor, "Tonic." "Free Magic" is a balance of melodic and avant-garde music. 'Doppler' gently wakes up in a relaxed avant-haze. After six minutes of atmospheric percussion and melodica, the song puts down that morning cup of coffee and begins in earnest. This minor-keyed adventure is Chis Wood's contribution to the album. As would be expected, Wood plays a fantastic bass solo on one of the album's strongest songs. The second selection begins with four minutes of free jazz before transitioning into a beautiful blues. While the second movement starts off in a slow blues, it soon kicks into triple time and swings hard. John Medeski really stretches out on 'Blues for Another Day.' 'Free Magic' > 'Ballade in C minor,' 'Vergessene Seelen' is twelve minutes of spacey avant-garde. Instant gratification is found in 'Where's Sly.' While featured on "It's a Jungle in Here," many know it as a road-tested live favorite. The song plays for around eight minutes until it blends into an eight minute drum solo by Billy Martin. It is one of several sequences that some may find self-indulgent. 'Nostalgia In Times Square' > 'Angel Race' is an accessible and spirited closer. "Free Magic" makes for a good acoustic contribution to the band's catalog. Traditionally, there has been a divide between fans that appreciate MMW's acoustic and electric material. "Free Magic" won't change this as it offers a contrast to the band's typical offering of pyrotechnic avant-groove. In the end, it's still Medeski Martin & Wood and it's great for what it is. The CD will run you about eight bucks but as the title suggests, the magic is free.

Crisp recording of live acoustic MMW, like the Tonic release, but newer material and terrific takes of a couple of old favorites, Where's Sly and Mingus' Nostalgia in Times Square. Sounds fresh, lots of soul jazz, priced right, simple packaging.

Loved it. My nephew turned me onto MMW and this is my first experience of their music. Definitely different - in a fun way.

This is amazing. I liked Tonic, but I had to be 'bout tweaked to get into it all...but this acoustic album is just what the doctor ordered. I've been a MMW fan for 13 years, seen them live 6 times, so if experience and familiarity mean anything, buy this. Especially if you Love MMW but thought TONIC was a bit excessive with the mood pieces. You don't need Headphones for this one! Don't get me Wrong, I love Tonic, At Times, and Free Magic has many psychedelic moments, as would any MMW fan expect. Yet THIS one doesn't go into space half as much making it more cohesive...and Jamming! So far, the Standout Tracks to me are "Nostalgia in Times Square" and...well, OF COURSE "Where's Sly" is gonna rock...but this one rocks HARD! I just got this 5 days ago and been working so I Haven't had the proper listen but every song on this album SHINES! Another comparison or two,.. I've had Radiolarians 2 and 3 for a while and I consider them essential....and now I Couldn't picture owning my Radiolarian CD's W/O also owning this piece of Blues. BUY IT. FREE MAGIC
