Review

Many quiltmakers would love to be able to machine quilt their quilts. Machine quilting at home on a domestic sewing machine is faster than hand quilting and cheaper than sending quilt tops to longarm machinists. It also allows quiltmakers to complete every step involved in making their quilt.

Eva Larkin set out to teach herself the secrets not only of machine quilting, but also of creating quilting designs that didn't need to be marked on the quilt top and weren't just overall meandering or stitching in the ditch. Within a year, she was teaching others what she'd learned, and this book captures much of what she has passed on in those workshop classes.

The book is presented in the style of a workshop with exercises for readers to practice what they've learned. At the heart of the book are eight basic designs, each of which has at least five variations. Each design is relatively simple to stitch without hours of practice or any time spent marking the quilt top. Samples are shown.

Larkin has also included a chapter on how to decide how to quilt your quilt, which many readers, I m sure, will find enormously helpful. She provides a systematic approach along with a gallery of designs to inspire.

This is a very practical book; it's intended to be used as a workbook, not as a theory text that you will read and store on your bookshelf. If you're ready to have a go at free-motion machine quilting or, if you've tried and not experienced much success, this book is likely to be a very useful companion. --Megan Fisher, Australian Homespun-Complete Craft Blog

This is a well-written, detailed, step-by-step instruction book on how to learn machine quilt on your home sewing machine. Good basic instructions on mastering thread tension, controlling stitch length and quilting in smaller sections. Larkin moves the reader slowly through the process of learning, recommending exercises on both paper and fabric "sandwiches." Larkin says, "My favorite designs are those that are easy to quilt, add texture to the quilt top, and require little marking." She relies on eight basic, easy to master shapes for all her designs--the oval, loop, lopsided figure eight, tulip, heart, triangle, diamond and flower.

If you're ready to take the plunge into machine quilting or ready to move past stitch-in-the-ditch and stippling, Free-Motion Quilting Made Easy is a great tool to step you through the process. --Quilting on a Budget blog

This book has lots of great tips on how to get started quilting your own quilts. Reading the section on Free-Motion Quilting Basics you will find tips such as using the right foot (and that doesn't mean the one on the floor!), thread tension, how to secure your starting thread, hand position and quilting gloves. While this only covers a few of the tip, they are good ones to start with.

Ms. Larkin also provides exercises for you to try out your newly learn techniques. We all know that the word here is PRACTISE! By using simply shapes, she shows you how to create intricate patterns that will add that special touch to your quilt top. There are eight basic shapes and once you have those down, the sky is the limit.

Once you have learned the shapes, then you can use the handy chart to find the page that has that combination. This tells you which one to create first and the pages individual designs can be found on which tells you where to start and the direction to sew. There are extra tip boxes throughout the book that are highlighted in soft yellow boxes with dashed lines around it.

There is a section of the book that covers what and where to quilt and has graphics to help explain the techniques. And a section is a gallery of quilts that show the whole quilt and "exploded" sections so you can see more of the detail. The last two pages provide a Troubleshooting chart. If you want to learn to quilt your own quilts with free-motion designs, this would be a great book to use.

I love this book! It is the most helpful and detailed book I've seen on free-motion quilting. As a fairly new quilter, the in-depth instructions and illustrations have really assisted me in my quilting. The step-by-step method illustrated here makes me look like a pro!

Easy to understand set-up and preparation of each block for free-motion design. The many illustrations show how to meld designs as well as arrows to show the path of the needle for the chosen design. There are suggestions on design to use for different shapes as well as areas that might not need quilting. The narrative is detailed and easy to follow.

I am new to free-motion quilting and I know I have much to learn, but I did find many helpful things in this book. After a two-part class on free-motion quilting and careful reading of three other books on the subject I happened across this book and decided to add it to my library. Along with a section on all of the basic information the author believes is needed to begin free-motion quilting (everything from setting up your sewing area to which type of thread the author recommends), what really attracted me to it was the fact that the designs contained therein are based on blocks, rather than continuous line quilting. Most volumes I had perused were based solely on continuous line quilting and since I do a lot of sampler quilts, I wanted to see some designs that fit within and complimented the block patterns. That is what you have here!
Using the eight basic shapes of oval, loop, lopsided figure eight, tulip, heart, triangle, diamond and flower, Eva Larkin creates beautiful quilting designs that accent and enhance the blocks in the quilt. She gives guidelines for practicing the quilting, how to decide what design to put within the different sections of the quilt, what to do with the borders, and how to layer those basic shapes to make stunning patterns. She explains how to use reference lines and points on the quilt to complete your design more smoothly. And there truly are 186 designs for quilting within a block.
I am still pretty insecure in my machine quilting ability, but I look forward to using these patterns to give a special look when I want something more than an all-over design.
The book wraps up with a gallery of quilts displaying many of the designs in the book, and a trouble shooting section for common machine quilting problems.

Of the wide variety of books on free-motion machine quilting that I have read, this is probably the very best. The advice and the exercises are good, but there is still the issue of the exercises being done on relatively small pieces of fabric. It's quite different to try the same thing on a full-size bed quilt. The 'nesting' technique, as opposed to the roll technique, for getting a clear area to quilt on is good, but I found that the 4.5" area that she recommended didn't work for me. Nevertheless, this was worth the time and money, and I did learn from it.

"Free-Motion Quilting Made Easy: 186 designs from 8 simple shapes" by Eva A. Larkin is a Must Have book for machine quilters or anyone interested in learning to machine quilt.

This book is an amazing resource. Not only are you given 186 different continuous line quilt designs, but more importantly Larkin shows you how she took a few basic shapes and combined them to create the designs. These are skills which can be duplicated using any shape you might care to try. It also allows you to resize any of the designs she shows to the exact size you require.

Larkin has included sections on how to set up your quilting area, how to determine stitch length, how to break your quilt up into manageable sized areas to quilt and a trouble shooting guide for several common problems which might be encountered.

This is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in machine quilting.
