5.0 out of 5 stars Super Smooth Jazz CD by a legendary Guitar Player!
Just to bring you up to date for those that don't know the whole story behind Rick Derringer - He's been playing music professionally for over 40 years. Remember the song Hang On Sloopy by the McCoys? The song that bumped "Yesterday" by the Beatles of the U.S. charts. That's Rick. Remember Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo in the 70's? 3.0 out of 5 stars Marginally Good!
This is a good CD if you are new to smooth jazz.It really doesn't measure up to "real" smooth jazz works but it gets an A for effort.

Remeber those great rock albums by Edgar Winter (hit songs: Free Ride/Frankenstein), those certified gold albums by Johnny Winter? Thanks Rick. Player and producer. Rick also has played and or produced with the likes of Kiss, Air Supply, Cyndi Lauper, Weird Al, Barbara Striesand, Meat Loaf, Steely Dan, Alice Cooper - the list goes on.

So here we are in the 5th decade of music from this master. Check out Rick's venture into Smooth Jazz. Guitar lovers should really dig this! Hot & Cool is the second single from Free Ride. Original, funky,, great guitar playing.

The fire keeps burning for this guy. Check it out!

I first heard Free Ride on WQCD-FM in NY and instantly loved
"Jazzy Koo". Superb playing from a guitar great. I just bought Free Ride, and it is a fantastic disc. I am a guitar player and
smooth jazz guitar fanatic. Free Ride is a testimony to Rick's
expert playing/arranging. The solo on "Good 2 Go" is outstanding.
This is one disc I just keep playing over and over.
"Free Ride" and "Hot & Cool" are a few of my favorite tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Derringer expands..., October 24, 2002
This review is from: Free Ride (Audio CD)
The classic rock master, Rick Derringer, has turned his sights on another style of music and once again proven his versatility. Jazzy reworks of classics such as "Rock n roll hoochie coo" and "Frankenstein" are refreshing. The highlight of the CD has got to be "Rhapsody in Red".

Well mixed and well paced, I highly suggest this CD for a romantic candle lit evening with a loved one!

5.0 out of 5 stars FREE RIDE REVIEW, October 23, 2002
This review is from: Free Ride (Audio CD)
I finally got my hands on the new Rick Derringer masterpiece "FREE RIDE". It's truely amazing to hear the musical diversity of Rick Derringer and this CD is no exception. This time around he's playing some incredible jazz with some great players. I found the whole CD a pleasurable listen from start to finish. It's also refreshing to hear him play guitar with such a clean and beautiful tone. Don't get me wrong I love it when Rick cranks on the distortion and tears it up but if you're looking for something a little on the soothing side check out this release. It's a must have for any true Rick Derringer fan out there.

the vendor did a fine job, but this music is not what I expected from this artist. I was expecting some good old rockin boogie and instead heard some very tepid jazz. If you are looking for some flacid drone, this record is it...

4.0 out of 5 stars SURPRISE., September 20, 2009
This review is from: Free Ride (Audio CD)
This record took me by surprise. Very interesting retakes of a few of his big tunes. Very clean guitars and I love the "Rhapsody in Red" piece. He's a cruising guitar player. Got all the chops. Get it before the number guys make it go away.

Rick Derringer displays his mastery of guitar, his versatility as a musician, and the reason he has had such a long career in the entertainment industry, gaining national recognition in 1965 with his #1 hit, " Hang on Sloopy", and working with other stars in the business, and having a great solo career.

I can't get enough of this CD! My wife bought it for me the first day it came out and it's the only thing we've been listening to since. Rick Derringer is a master at creating music of many different genres. Free Ride is infectious and beautiful. Rick Derringer's guitar playing is amazing, the melodies are sweeeeeeet and his vocals are super! Everyone that I've played Free Ride for is blown away. I highly recommend Free Ride.
