Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Goines offers an encyclopedic account of the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley in the mid-1960s, focusing on his role in the sit-ins and other protests occurring between September and December 1964. While some readers may not share his enthusiasm for the minutiae of history, this work will no doubt serve as the standard sourcebook for the period. Goines has incorporated comments from former students, academics, and administrators, including student leader Mario Savio and Professor Nathan Glazer, that provide valuable alternative insights. Appendixes include a guide to local and national committees and organizations of the day, dramatis personae, a chronology of the Movement, and a "Free Speech Songbook"--consisting mostly of rewordings of well-known songs. Complementary studies include Todd Gitlin's The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage (Bantam, 1987) and Jack Whalen's Beyond the Barricades: The Sixties Generation Grows Up ( LJ 9/15/89). Highly recommended for most libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Free Speech Movement.., November 14, 1998

This review is from: The Free Speech Movement (Hardcover)
An inspiring and fun account of what happens when institutions loses touch with their goals. A first hand account of the events of 64 from one who lived through it. Much better than most of the heady intellectual analysis already in print. This is all you need to know on the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, February 1, 2012
This review is from: The Free Speech Movement (Hardcover)
This is the BEST book of all time! While such a statement might seem silly, I can absolutely guarantee - especially to any American who loves our Constitution - that this is most definitely the case.

The book was incredible, real, relevant, inspiring, even hilarious. It should be required reading. I kept thinking throughout - why hasn't this been made into a documentary or a movie to share this with people who don't read? It was literally the best book I've ever read. The fight for the First Amendment, Freedom of Assembly, Freedom to Petition the Government, Freedom of Speech, Civil Rights, Equality, and even the consequences - that it didn't work out perfectly, that people went to jail, that justice isn't always done, that it's always a struggle, that fighting someone else's fight doesn't empower them - that we The People need to stand up (or sit down :) and fight for our rights, that there will be the masses who hassle and fight against you out of ignorance, ... - so many lessons; it was inspiring as hell!

And talk about heroes and pivotal characters! Mario, Jack, Jackie, Art, the Author, all of them - they were amazing! They fought for what they believed in, never shied away from the consequences, and won in so many ways!

I just want to personally say thank you to the author - and implore him to publish another edition; maybe even condense it some to be more accessible for young readers.

Sharing the story, I think, would make this country a much better place.
