Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Grade 3-8-Free Stuff has chapters describing sites for games ("Game Zone"), crafts ("Craft Jam"), manufacturer's giveaways ("Mail Madness"), and downloads. Super Sports features chapters like "Diamond Dandies" (baseball), "Hoop Scoop" (basketball), "Fancy Footwork" (football and soccer), and "Cool Sports" (ice/snow). A broad range of sports is covered, though there is a heavy focus on baseball. The chapter headings are a clue to the tone of the books: light, snappy, and aimed at the sound-bite generation. Usually only one site is presented per page, complete with a clear, black-and-white reproduction of the home page and a brief descriptive paragraph. Additional quotes from students, primarily in the fifth through eighth grades, who "checked out" the sites are objective. An introduction, a warning on Internet safety, a list of popular search engines, and a Web-site index enrich these Webliographies. Of course, books like these will quickly be out of date, but while they're hot, they're hot.
