Pharmecutical Explanation.,

This review is from: Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow (Audio CD)
When i first heard this album, i was hypnotized by the funk. Honestly, this album was recorded while the fellas was all high on acid. (That's what George Clinton said). My fav is "Some More" with Bernie rockin' the Hammond B3. It's a bluesy type of song, but oh so funky! The late Eddie Hazel in my opinion was the greatest guitarist (other than the late Jimi Hendricks. If you like rock, and I mean acid rock, cop this peice here. The title cut is also a good song to just listen to ...as a matter of fact, put ur headset on and I guarentee, you will think you're trippin on some stuff! I can't believe how far these guys have come. Tiki Fullwood (Drums)(RIP) Eddie Hazel (Guitar) (Rip), Tawl Ross (Guitar), Bernie Worrell (Keyboards), George Clinton, Calvin Simon, Grady Thomas, Ray Davis. (Parliament) Get this album along with Live @ Meadowbrook.......

I Know That It Must Have Been Good To You Baby,

"cause you're still buying Funkadelic albums! This album was out there!! "Friday Night" is a hard jam as well as "Free Your Mind". this is all rock baby! "I Wanna Know If It's Good" the "Funkadeletts" give you a taste of their sensual yet strong voices--George really knows how how to pic 'em. This album I did not appreciate when i first heard it but, as I grew up I was like wow! This stuff is tight!! The funk is in your face and these musicians really rock a house--The original Funkadelics should be inducted again into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Very excellent work for some very young musicians. The Parliaments are truly doing their thing with the vocals and this album has a lot of energy. Funkadelic set a tone and my hat's off to Bernie Worrell! He rocked those keys like Eddie and Tawl rocked those guitars! There is no other keyboard player like Bernie Worrell in rock music ---probably never will be. These are very innovative people who moved a world--they are still rockin' and funkin' all over the planet.

Free your mind!,

I know George and company had to been blowed out of their mind when they recorded this album back in 70. But you still can't take away the fact that it was a very good recording. Not to mention, there was a message in Funkadelic's music even if it did sound somewhat bizarre. George Clinton was quite politically aware of what was going on during that era, which was why a lot of their music along with his other group Parliament was so great. I'm proud to have this title along with all of the others in my collection.

man love this album this is the wildest funkadelic album I can't decide if free yoyur mind or maggot brain is scarier anyway george clinton came up with the idea to have the group all drop lsd and see what they can record in a single afternoon well this is it free your mind stzars with weird feedback coming from eddie hazel and bernie worrell they was really on some chit here george chanting free your mind and the song gets crazier and crazier you can hear tawl ross tripping out screaming throughout the song the song sounds like some armageddon 4 horsem,en type stuff you'll swear the apocalypse is coming when the band decide to snap and really let loose george going crazy saying I can't free my mind what trime is it then bernie worell goes baserk and then you can hear eddie hazel solo then the song fades out only to fade back in with eddie and the band going to mars you can hear tawl ross say lucifer and loki towards the end of the song if you have good ears. next up is friday night aug the 14th eddie hazel and billy nelson sing on this one the song is about getting paid going out copping somr drugs and cheap hookers and eddie hazel turns another amazing solo and tiki's druim work is superb. frunky dollar bill has tawl ross singing lead about the dangers of drug aDDICTION RAY DAVIS CO WROTE this tune and he said he came up with it by watching the band get high and how drugs affected everbody. I wanna know should be recogfnized more eddie hazel comes with one of the scariest riffs in rock history you know hendrix told eddie shortly before his death that they were pocessed by the same spirit and it shows here bernie worrell is great here he souinds like well hear for yourself. eulogy and light has george clinton reciting the lord's prayer from a drug dealer perspective while backmasking a gospel tune really scary at the end you hear george say gunfight backwards twice.

Classic Album / Awful Remaster,
By
This review is from: Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow (Audio CD)
As stated in the previous reviews, this indeed is a psychedlic soul classic. However I picked up this Westbound re-issue at a retail shop in NYC and was mortified at how poor the sound was. My wife thought I was playing a worn cassette.I'm no audiophile, but the quality of this so-called remaster is not worth purchasing. I'm keeping an eye out for a used vinyl copy at local antique shops and fairs. I hope this record will get a proper re-issue akin to the great Sony Legacy series, or Rhino.

This album broke some barriers between rock and soul music that Jimi Hendrix had only begun to break down before his untimely death. No worries, Eddie Hazel was doing similar things on the guitar, though with another approach, and the vision of George Clinton to play through. If you think Neil Young's 'Tonight's the Night' captured a mood of drug/alcohol-addled redemption, you really should listen to this song cycle [song-psycho?]. Clinton nails acid-rock and the band bursts through it, full of raw power, humor, and divinely-inspired re-alignment of the planets. This stuff can be enjoyed in one long monster jam, or song-by-song, and the desired effect is what you'll find when you improve your interplanetary funksmanship. Dig!

A Masterpiece Album,
By
This review is from: Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow (Audio CD)
Funkadelic / Free your mind and your ass will follow: This is a Masterpiece of funk/rock fusion. This is amazingly good. The old ads for this album promised to `blow your mind', well, I did not hear the album until a few years after that (but still on LP) and they did not lie...this is a mind-blowing release. This is a solid five star album.I have the 10 track, 2005 Westbound Records CD and the sound on it is as good as I have ever heard for this album. Free your mind from the pretend Audio nitpickers and buy this CD.

Classic Album,
This review is from: Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow (Audio CD)
Following the death of Jimi Hendrix, you had to wonder who would "pick up the torch" so to speak in the Funk/Blues/Rock arena after "The Experience" had taken us to new realms of possibilites of what Blues/Funk/Rock could all be and how they could fit together to make music that was truly on a whole other plane. Enter The Funkadelic's! This album is an all time classic with some of the most outstanding musicianship you'll ever here. George Clinton & Eddie Hazel where the main songwriters on this album and it truly shows how incredible they both were at this craft.
It blends several different genres of music into one album, you've got the acid rock feel of "Free Your Mind" to the hard rock anthem "Friday Night, August the 14th" (the guitar work on this song is incredible) next is straight up classic blues with "Funky Dollar Bill" (pay attention to the intro on this one, Outstanding!) then you have the funk inspired "I Wanna know if it's Good to you"! This was the kind of music Jimi Hendrix was attempting to bring the mainstream into when he formed the "Band Of Gypsy's". However, his manager forced him to disband that group due to "contractual" concerns i.e. he wanted to control the direction of Hendrix's career and keep him playing the same ole status quo that Jimi grew tired of. Fortunately for us, George Clinton had no such concerns and was able to take the idea Jimi had (which by the way George also seperately had) and bring it to the mainstream in a powerful way! I agree with the reviewer who stated the original members should be in the R&R Hall of Fame! And Eddie Hazel should get WAY MORE praise for his guitar work than he does. People always ask if Jimi Had lived would he have developed into what we heard from Eddie. Think about that statement, it indicates that there was something Eddie had that Jimi had yet to develop! Eddie truly was the BEST! RIP. This is an album that truly was the beginning of something very special in the music world. Although it was their second album, it was the first to truly garner them mainsteam attention, which, by the way, is criminal as their first album was a wonderful collection of music as well. This album shows great range and diversity and was a prelude for the masterpiece to follow "Maggot Brain", the album that truly burst them into the public consciousness forever and made them a main stay in musical thought. Give it up for The Funkadelics as they were, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest bands at any point in music history. |
