Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The multitude of large screen shots and the careful step-by-step instruction in this Visual QuickStart Guide help elucidate the many tasks that newcomers to FreeHand 8 will need to undertake. The guide teaches you to create and customize pages; change views; work with guides, grids, and rulers; and then manage layers. You progress to learning necessary tasks such as drawing shapes; applying strokes; using the FreeHand pen and other drawing tools; working with points and paths; drawing with the Pen and Bezigon tools; moving, skewing, rotating, and otherwise transforming images; working with color; applying fills; and working with strokes, blends, text, text effects, styles, and path operations such as Joined and Intersect commands.

The last few chapters explain how to use Xtras, charts, and graphs and how to import and export images to and from other applications, such as Adobe Photoshop. You work with Web-safe colors, create Web images and animations, work with Shockwave Flash, and create Web pages using the insta.html Xtra. Finally, you learn how to print images and customize FreeHand's preferences. Appendices show you the elements of the FreeHand interface, keyboard shortcuts, and fills and strokes. --Kathleen Caster

5.0 out of 5 stars The Way to Go!!!, November 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: FreeHand 8 for Windows & Macintosh (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
If you're looking for a fast, friendly, and easy-to-understand way to learn Freehand 8.0, this Visual QuickStart Guide is it. Sandee Cohen walks you through the Freehand environment with grace and ease, showing not only simple methods of vector imaging, but some of the trickier aspects as well. This book is a must have for beginners and experts alike. As a graphic design application instructor, the VQSG helps me in developing curriculum for my students because I know it has the information I need. I especially like (as with the entire line of Visual QuickStart Guides) the large screen displays...they help the reader to see and understand the concepts Cohen describes. Get it or you might get lost!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to FH 8, for beginners and veterans., March 10, 1999
This review is from: FreeHand 8 for Windows & Macintosh (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
Having bought several of these Visual Quickstart books I can say that this one is very well organized and written. The index is excellent and will lead you where you want to go.

I am about to buy Photoshop 4 and Pagemill 2 and I wish that both were written by Sandee Cohen, although all the Visual Quickstart books are helpful.
