5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read! July 26, 2010
This story is a definite page-turner. The story moves quickly and I stayed up too late on more than a few occasions because I had trouble putting it down. The author shows his respect for young adults by staying away from the stereotypes of teens found in most novels. Instead, the "kids" in this book are smart, competent, and down-to-earth. Even the antagonist is a complex character who defies traditional distinctions between good and evil. I wish there were more books like this when I was a kid!

5.0 out of 5 stars Freek Camp: Outstanding Read, Left wanting more... July 27, 2010
As a reader of storyteller Steve Burt's works, and a big fan of his book, "A Christmas Dozen", A Christmas Dozen: Christmas Stories to Warm the Heart I was excited and anxious to read the new paranormal thriller "FreeK Camp". The story of the "special" kids attending a summer camp in the woods of New England kept me engaged from beginning to end. The characters all seem just like real everyday people, until they grow to know each other, learning to work together using their unique talents to solve the Camp's mystery. Action, heroic adventures, personal growth & enlightenment top off what I consider to be one of the year's best reads for children and adults alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars FreeK camp: A Great Book for all ages June 29, 2010
FreeK camp, written by Steve Burt is a very fun book to read. Anyone is able to read this book, and once you start reading, you can't stop. You'll bring it everywhere you go because of the amazing abilities of 5 teenagers rescuing another 5 teenagers that are in grave danger. each and every teen has his or her own psychic power, from spoon bending all the way to levitation. The main idea of this brilliant book is to rescue five teens from danger. They were kidnapped by a complete stranger who lost his wife and daughter. They start to think that he was going crazy because there was no reason for the kidnapping. To not give away the ending that was not expected, i am going to have to stop here, But that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. This book only has 260 pages, which is easy to read for anyone, from kids to adults. Anyone will love this page-turning thriller, and that's not going to be a lie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fine book from Steve Burt June 28, 2010
This book is a great read. It's got a good, tight plot and it moves quickly. The characters are well done, especially the unique group of individuals who run the camp. The kids at the camp are well-imagined also. I think writers sometimes tend to fall into cliches when dealing with adolescents, but Burt avoids that pitfall nicely. The interaction between these kids felt real...and it was fascinating to watch them grow and learn to work together as a team. I would recommend this book to young and old, and I hope there's more where this one came from!

Five teens make it to camp, and five do not. What teen has not felt a little odd, different, out of sink with life? These teens admit their oddity, share their oddity, and use their individual "talent" or oddity, along with teamwork and reasoning skills, to rescue the five no-shows. This story unfolds, is not forced, and has a thrilling, unexpected ending. Great book for all readers and especially great for lovers of the paranormal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular July 12, 2010
By Alice W
Steve Burt is an amazing story teller. His cast of characters carry the story along nicely and each one participates. The thrill and suspense was clean, neat and uncluttered. The suspense kept me turning pages and was hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to people ages 10 and up. Not a scary tale, great suspense.

More About the Author

STEVE BURT appeared on readers' radar in 2003 when his unknown collection, Even Odder, became a surprise Nominee/finalist for the coveted Bram Stoker Award, horror's top prize, in the Young Readers category (in a field of five that included Neil Gaiman and J.K. Rowling, who eventually won for Harry Potter). The next year (2004) Steve had another finalist with Oddest Yet (in a field of four that included Clive Barker and Dean Koontz)--which resulted in an unprecedented tie between Steve and Clive, giving each of them a Stoker. Other collections in the Stories to Chill the Heart Series included Odd Lot (2001 Benjamin Franklin Award) and Wicked Odd (2005 Ippie Award finalist). All four are available in print and ebook.

Steve's FreeKs series of thriller featuring psychic teens has won 24 international awards including Grand Prize at the 2015 Florida Book Festival, and the London, Paris, NY, New England, Hollywood, and San Francisco Book Festival Awards, the Moonbeam Children's Book Award, the Halloween Book Festival and 3 Beach Book Festival Awards, a Next Generation Indie, plus 4 Mom's Choice golds. FreeK Camp, FreeK Show, and FreeK Week are available in print, ebook, and audio book read by Melissa Epp.

Thirteen of Steve's most popular radio-read-aloud stories from the Stories to Chill the Heart series make up Wicked Strange (print, ebook, and audio book read by Michael Piotrasch).

With input from middle-school teacher and editor Jolyn Joslin, the storybook/textbook includes discussion questions and writing prompts, with answers in the back. Available in print, ebook, and audio book read by Michael Piotrasch.

A retired pastor and seminary professor, the Rev. Dr. Burt formerly wrote church leadership and inspirational books and contributed to Family Circle magazine and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. His bestseller, A Christmas Dozen: Christmas Stories to Warm the Heart won numerous awards and is available in print, ebook, and audio book read by the author. Unk's Fiddle: Stories to Warm the Heart is now out-of-print; its title story "Unk's Fiddle" won a Ray Bradbury Creative Writing Prize (one of three the author received).

In 2009 Connecticut Magazine profiled Rev. Burt as "The Sinister Minister," acknowledging the importance of his contribution to teen and Y.A. dark fiction.
