Product Description

Size: 1 Meter Kit

Accuracy and simplicity for busy people. Features an innovative automatic calibration feature that eliminates the manual coding step usually required by most blood glucose meters before starting a new vial of test strips. Offers virtually pain-free testing due to the very small blood sample size (0.3 microliter) about the size of a pin head and is the world's smallest known sample size. The meter is compact in size for discreet testing, yet has a large, high contrast display and a backlight for easy, on-the-go testing. Allows for alternate site testing using the forearm, thigh and palm, instead of having to use sensitive finger tips. Fast 5 second average test time and up to 60 second blood reaapplication time. Memory has capacity for up to 400 results with 7, 14 and 30 day result averages with four programmable alarms. Includes Freestyle Lite Blood Glucose Meter with battery, control solutions, 10ct test strips, a lancing device, an alternate site cap, a logbook, carrying case and a Read-Me First Getting Started Guide and owner's manual. Uses Freestyle Lite test strips.

I'm not sure why no one had outlined what is in this package.

1. Meter -- has backlight, alarms, 400 test memory
2. Strips -- 10 strips of the new butterfly design which require VERY little blood, like a pin head.
3. Lancets -- 10 disposable lancets, totally painless seriously
4. Lancing tool -- some thing where you insert the lance and set it to 1-4 deepness and press a button, snap.
5. Control solution -- to test the accuracy of the meter
6. Adorable carrying bag with a perfect spot for everything.

This thing is tiny and easy I love it. and I researched and found that it is one of the top in terms of accuracy as tested by the government (it was a UK analysis, but it included most of the popular meters from the U.S. For those who claim the lancing tool is not consistent, that is not true; the problem is that it starts off much tighter and after about 20 uses loosens up. Where a setting of 1 was enough for the first 10 lances, it now has to be at a 2 to pierce the same area. My pointer requires a 3 and it doesn't hurt.

Also, the meter allows for alternate site testing, but only the fingers are recommended for hypoglycemics as is the case regardless of what meter you use.

While I was not thrilled to be diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I was very happy that my doctor chose this glucose monitor for me! While this is the only monitor I've used, type 1 runs in my family and I've watched my father go through various glucometers over the years and have since compared mine to his current glucometers. I also participate on forums for women with gd and have heard a lot of moaning and gnashing of teeth over their sub-par monitors. I thus feel like I can say this is an excellent glucometer, despite it being my only personal experience.

Upon opening the package I was shocked at how tiny this glucometer is! It is about the same size of an egg, so the "lite" label definitely applies. It was extremely simple to understand and begin use, requiring virtually no set up or coding. The black case it comes in is discreet and would easily fit in even the smallest of purses. The zippered pocket inside the case is convenient for extra lancets. It also has a light which makes it easy to use in the dark or in a car at night, this feature has come in useful more than once. First it illuminates the testing strip area so you can see where the strip is, and once the strip registers contact with your blood it lights up the LCD screen that will display your reading.

The lancet pen that came with it is also easy to use, and I really appreciate the settings of 1-4, which adjusts how deep the lancet pierces your skin. For me, a setting of 1 - 2 has always been enough as it takes the teeniest drop of blood for this glucometer work. It also means that the pain is virtually non-existent when it comes to poking my own finger. I have not had a defective testing strip yet, and I've been using this glucometer 6 times a day for two months now.

As a long-time diabetes-educator/pharmacist in both the community and hospital settings, I have seen many products over the years developed for patients with diabetes. While some are not beneficial, many provide great benefits to patients with diabetes.
In my professional opinion, the Freestyle line of diabetic glucose meters are wonderful products.
The devices are quite small, and with all the accessories for testing, the entire pouch and contents will fit in a small pocket.
Testing-time/result time is quite short.
Test strips have two points of contact with the patient's test site, so are easily used by either left- or right-handed individuals (one-time test strips).
Blood-sample-size is quite small, so there is less pain on use, which enhances patient compliance (willingness to test and monitor their blood sugar levels).
There is a built-in mini LED light for night-time testing without "waking the entire household".
Patient-support services are exceptional by the company.
Multiple sites may be used to obtain blood for testing purposes, however, see "testing tricks" below.
There are a few "tricks" to improve testing results and patient compliance, however.
When performing routine testing from the fingertip, the patient should first wash their hands with soap and mildly-hot water. The soap will remove the bulk of skin bacteria much better than an alcohol swab, and the water temperature (at a temperature comparable to that used when washing dishes) will also dilate the local blood vessels, making the lancing process less painful with better results.

This meter has done me well. I much prefer it to other glucose meters from other suppliers because: 1) it's small; 2) it's fast; 3) you don't necessarily have to stick the pads of your fingers [although that is generally the most accurate site]; 4) the testing strips work well; 5) the meter has a lot of helpful features like the ability to retain past readings; 6) a nifty little black zippercase is included; as are 7) an injector device and ten lancets; and 8) thus far, the meter has been quite reliable.

Remember when manufacturers virtually gave away the razor and made the profit on blades? Somthing similar is at work in the blood-glucose meter market. The meters are relatively cheap, and the lancets aren't terribly high, but a box of testing strips (absolutely vital and not subject to price competition) costs a ton. Even with Amazon's good price, a box of 100 strips costs more than twice than the meter itself. Note also that no testing strips are included in the kit that comes with this meter.

However you work it, the price can get very high, especially for regular or heavy testers. Partial solution: shop around. But I am very partial to this FreeStyle Lite meter and the strips.
