Review

Praise for The Freedom Agenda:

“The bureaucratic fat cats in Washington are spending us into oblivion, and the mainstream media are too busy pandering to Barack Obama to notice that our country is going dangerously astray. In this book, Senator Mike Lee explains exactly how we got into this mess in the first place, how the courts have allowed it to happen, and how patriots like you and me can put our great nation back on track. If you share Thomas Jefferson’s view that big government leads to tyranny, I urge you to read Mike Lee’s important new book.”
—Mark Levin
Nationally syndicated radio talk show host

“In The Freedom Agenda, Senator Mike Lee clearly explains how presidents and Congresses have exceeded the confines of the Constitution and how the courts have let them get away with it. His proposals to limit the federal government’s ability to take and spend our money will frustrate the big government types in both parties and warm the hearts of freedom lovers everywhere.”
—Hon. Andrew P. Napolitano
Anchor of Freedom Watch on Fox Business Network

“Mike Lee has written a book that would make our Founders proud, especially Alexander Hamilton, our first treasury secretary, who put America on a firm course of sound money and prudent finance.”
—Steve Forbes
President and chief executive officer of Forbes

“Senator Mike Lee reminds us of something that our Founders knew well: big government is a threat to freedom-loving people everywhere. We must stop its growth, and Senator Lee makes a compelling argument that a balanced budget amendment is the best way to do just that. There’s no better advocate for this kind of common-sense solution than Senator Lee, and there’s no better book to explain how to make it a reality.”
—Glenn Beck
#1 New York Times bestselling author of The Original Argument

In a world turned upside down by deep debt, out-of-contol spending, and a liberal agenda designed to change America forever, Senator Mike Lee outlines specifically why we need long term solutions, not short term stopgap fixes in this well-written book. Mike Lee knows the Constitution, and he understands the way to return America to it and its principles of guidance that enabled this country to lead the world for 230 years. If you care about the direction we're heading, and wonder what we can do about it, read this book to become informed as to the best solution for solving our debt crisis now and in the future.

I have nothing but good things to say about this book, including the $1.24 Kindle price tag. U.S. Senator Mike Lee of Utah brings us a quick read in favor of passing a 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution in the form of a Balanced Budget Amendment (i.e. Restricting federal government outlays within the boundaries of tax revenue). "The Freedom Agenda" starts off with a brief history lesson on the expansion of the federal government, particularly after The New Deal. This marked the point in history in which the federal government, as Sen. Lee explains, stopped asking if it "could" enact legislation, but whether it "should."

The context of this proposed amendment, as Sen. Lee describes, isn't just a matter of decreasing the federal deficit, but is also a matter of individual freedom. Not just for our current generation, but for future generations as well. Sen. Lee rightfully spends much of this book focusing on the importance of the federal government staying within the boundaries of the Constitution. As impossible as this sounds, this book explains what can be done to return power from the federal government to its proper place with the states. (e.g. "...whenever any member of Congress votes to fund a federal program or create a new one, that person should explain where Congress gets its constitutional authority to run that program.")

Considering the short length, the importance of the subject, not to mention the low price tag, "The Freedom Agenda" is an absolute must-read for any American concerned about the expansion of federal power. Sen. Mike Lee makes the case that individual liberty can coexist best with a small federal government, and that passing a Balanced Budget Amendment can be one of the most important things we can do to return to the original Constitutional principles our Founders envisioned.

Republicans suffer from this bizarre ailment that makes them want to fight with their own base. When you get a few of them who go in and stand with the people who elected them, other Republicans scratch their heads and are baffled by this. Mike Lee is part of the minority who stand on principle. While many people will disagree with Lee's assertions, for those honest enough to bother, there are obvious signs of the looming crisis. The Medicare actuary says Medicare is unsustainable. The ACA is an unveiled attempt to solve this with rationing. Obama has openly admitted the problem and yet, a large portion of the electorate seems to be oblivious to it.

This book is common sense, not religion. If people back away from their deeply held religious beliefs, the obviousness of Lee's solutions will present itself.

Mike Lee spells out in very easy to understand terms why it is important to have a balanced budget & what will happen if the country continues on the road of uncontrolled spending that our Central Government has been on for years. Very educational & informative. A must read for anyone interested in basic economics.

Mike Lee has written a very perceptive and practical exploration of the need for a balanced budget amendment. Americans who want their country to continue for their children and grandchildren would do well to heed what Mike has to say.

Mike Lee has done us a big favor in presenting his ideas--ones that have been too long lost in the quagmire of political brinkmanship! His common sense explication of what we need fiscally and ideologically rings true. I'm glad the people of his state recognized a good candidate and put him in a position of leadership. Enlightening, common sense, even refreshing! READ IT!

Sen Lee is probably correct on how to create a balanced budget amendment but he leaves a few holes. Like what to do to stop other things being amended as you create a balanced budget amendment. I learned a lot about the process and there are some great arguments about this timely idea. But this book really is himself trying align with the tea party. His final chapter, Boston to Philadelphia, was a poor add on to a previous dissertation on balanced budgets. Today's mainstream congressional tea partiers may disagree with ideas of increasing the debt ceiling (since he is for it). But it was worth reading. He is not a great writer and is not funny, even when he tries to be, but I enjoyed getting to know his mind a little better and he is not as radical as I once thought.

It will be interesting to see if he keeps with this line of thinking or backs down. So far so good for Mr. Lee. The toughest part for me was the 2nd half of the book was the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, etc. Thought important documents to have, it was just filler to sell more book.
