Book Description

January 15, 1993
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, black runaways braved an escape from slavery in an unprecedented alliance with Seminole Indians in Florida. This is the story of the maroons’ ethnogenesis in Florida, their removal to the West, their role in the Texas Indian Wars, and the fate of their long quest for liberty and self-determination along both sides of the Rio Grande. Their tale is rich, colorful, and epic, stretching from the swamps of the Southeast to the desert Southwest. From a borderlands mosaic of slave hunters, corrupt Indian agents, Texas filibusters, Mexican revolutionaries, French invaders, Apache and Comanche raiders, frontier outlaws, lawmen, and Buffalo Soldiers, emerges a saga of enslavement, flight, exile, and ultimately freedom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom on the Border, November 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was purchased by me and received in a timely manner. Though it was apparently soiled at some point during its readership, I remain encouraged by its content.
Being a descendent of one of the families mentioned I found this book to be quite interesting. This book further reiterates our very existence which through time has been lost by many.
It is always amazing to read various accounts of what really happened to the maroons of the East Coast throughout the Carolinas, through Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma regarding the Seminole Indians and their heritage. Much information I was aware of but this book, recommended by another family member has shed another perspective on the lives of our ancestors. I will be happy to recommend this book not only to family, but to families discovering how our ancestors lived and paved the roads of today with bloodshed, tears, fears, evictions and even death. I have always believed that what makes us weaker, in fact makes us much stronger. I only wish I had known this book was being written.
Thank you

This review is from: Freedom on the Border: The Seminole Maroons in Florida, the Indian Territory, Coahuila, and Texas (Hardcover)
Kevin, as always, is a master story teller. This book blends that mastery with a sound knowledge of the subject matter evidencing lots of research. Brings a few tears, but well worth reading.....
