5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom, Bound, June 29, 2011
This review is from: Freedom Bound (Paperback)
I just finished this book. I very nearly read it in one sitting. It's told in a factual unflinching style without apology. It makes no moral judgements, but simply reports things as they once were. In doing so, you are left to make your own peace with the story. For a simply written book, it has incredible impact. That the characters are real and walked this earth only adds frosting to a rather satisfying cake.

Well done, Rosalie!
My only change would be to add a comma to the title, making it, "Freedom, Bound"

This review is from: Freedom Bound (Paperback)
Freedom Bound depicts life during slavery with clarity and style. Anna, the principle character, is captured as a child in Africa. She endures the horror of losing her family, traveling to the new world under the most adverse circumstances, and adjusting to her life as a slave. Rosalie Turner leads the reader through the coming decades as Anna evolves into the favorite of the master of the plantation due to her wit and beauty. She loves him, births his children, rears them, and takes on a major role in the operation of the plantation.

Anna's life is atypical of slaves of the era, but this tale is based on Anna Kingsley, a real person. Only a novel could bring to life the sights, smells, and feelings of such an individual as she wages war with her environment and meets with success. Freedom Bound illustrates that no matter how much love and power is involved, a slave can never know freedom.
