This is one amazing chair.

The bad news: the headrest can only be adjusted about three inches from its default position, and is far too low for me.

I have owned this chair for over a year now. I purchased it when I was doing web site design from home, and would be sitting for long periods of time. I was having severe back pain prior to this purchase. This chair has made all the difference in being able to be productive for long periods of time. It is very comfortable, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has to sit and work from behind a desk, doing computer work, for long periods of time.

I've had this chair for roughly seven months. It is reasonably comfortable and has good lumbar support; the armrest adjustment mechanism is ingeniously simple, and the recline mechanism is passable (I wish it were possible to recline further than it allows, but within the range provided it works well.)

The bad news: the headrest can only be adjusted about three inches from its default position, and is far too low for me. At 6'1" it either hits the back of my shoulders or just above the back of my shoulders -- if I actually try to rest my head on it I am looking at the ceiling. Most importantly, the gel seat began to disintegrate after just a few months use: see my customer photo above. (A previous reviewer complained that the gel seat didn't appear to contain any gel -- this has not been my experience; the seat is quite squishy and was very comfortable, at least until the gel started to fall apart.) I have contacted the manufacturer to request a replacement seat pan; they were prompt and polite and are shipping a replacement with very little hassle.

On balance I would recommend this chair to someone much shorter than I am, but would avoid the gel seat cushion under any circumstances.

The pictures look inviting, don't they? The reviews are good. Buyer beware! This chair is absolutely terrible in every regard.

Let me start off with the seat cushion. I opted for the additional "gel" feature. Sounds really comfortable, doesn't it? I have used gel wrist rests before and those were comfortable, so this seat must be comfortable too, right? Well disregard everything you might associate with gel because this isn't what you'd expect. If there's anything that may be considered gel in it, which I would be surprised, then it's only a layer that's a millimeter thick and offers no discernible benefit. I was certain they sent me the non-gel seat. I wrote to the manufacturer and they shipped me a replacement (just the part you sit on that attaches to the frame). This one was exactly the same. It's a very thin cushion, so thin in fact that you can feel the raised molded plastic that's under the cushion in your buttocks. I'm 150 lb person so I don't think weight is a factor. It's just an unimpressive, cheap cushion.

The back. It's my understanding that the back does not have the gel option and that it's their standard cushion, which seems just barely adequate, but it's odd that it feels exactly like the seat which is suppose to be gel. The back also has some strange design where it juts out on the sides midway up and is annoying for your arms in a rested position.

The arm rests. I chose the gel option for these as well. They feel absolutely nothing like the gel seat--they are extremely firm. You have to apply tremendous pressure in order to compress them at all. For resting your arms they provide no comfort whatsoever. They could be upholstered bricks and I would not be able to tell the difference.

The headrest.

This is one amazing chair. I work out of a home office, and sometimes sit for 8-10 hours at a time, I also have some serious lower back problems. I can spend all day in this chair and my back doesn't bother me a bit. The coolest thing is the headrest, don't ask me how it works but it is out of your way when you sit upright, but when you recline, it adjusts your body angle so that you are still looking straight ahead, not at the ceiling as one normally would. The chair is not cheap, but since I spend alot of my day in it, I don't mind spending the extra money.

One must understand that NO chair can possibly fit all--it is crucial for anyone shopping for a chair of this price to test it out for at least an hour to truly know if it is right for you. To buy it otherwise is a foolish, and not to mention costly, mistake which probably accounts for most of the negative reviews on here.

That being said, I am absolutely in love with this chair which I currently own in the graphite fabric option. The construction is beautiful and it is clear that the whole piece was wonderfully made with meticulous attention to detail. The adjustable armrest is incredibly ergonomic, allowing the choice to use this chair with different desk heights or to forgo arm support all together (Humanscale has replaced the older version of this chair with a new one that remedies the faulty armrest problems people have complained about).

I've read that some people feel "pushed forward" by the backrest as if they are about to be ejected from the chair. I don't quite understand this criticism because the seat and backrest can be easily adjusted forward/back or up/down respectively, thus eliminating this problem fairly easily. I have a feeling such individuals just haven't adjusted their seats properly. The chair also "breaks in" to one's weight comfortably (I'm 5'11 and 180lbs with a solid gym build).

For those of you debating on whether to go for the headrest version vs non-headrest, I'd say if you have the money to spend and you are sitting for 8+ hours, you cannot go wrong with the headrest. It does make reclining more enjoyable and there is a comfort knowing that the support is there if you need it.
