1.0 out of 5 stars FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN BASED THERAPY
This book is written from a Christian perspective. God, church, and fundamental Christian values are an integral part of the therapeutic method. If such an approach is not appropriate for you, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Usually I buy books based on recommendations from others or from Amazon. This book I bought spur-of-the-moment because it was so inexpensive and I was looking for any and all workbooks at the time. I have Bipolar Disorder and, though it does not address mania much, I found this book extremely helpful in picking apart my poor defense mechanisms. It made me realize why I act and react the way I do to certain situations. The questions the book posed really made me think about my depression in ways I had never tried. The only problem I had with the book was the poorly written case stories. As an English major, I just had to accept that the author is a wonderful technical writer but possibly lacks experience in the creative fiction area. However, the quality of the rest of the book was so beneficial that I could overlook these flaws (and it was easy to flip over the short case studies that began each chapter).

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful with my depression, February 9, 2001
This review is from: The Freedom from Depression Workbook (Minirth Meier New Life Clinic Series) (Paperback)
Since I was diagnosed with Clinical Depression, I have read every book I could get my hands on. This one was by far one of the best. It has places for you to write down your feelings on the subject being discussed. I read a chapter, answer the questions then put it down. The next day, I reread the chapter, reread the answers, and sometimes add stuff, the next day, I do the 2nd chapter. I suggest you do it this way too, but it is up to you. This book helped me realize that I had a lot of built up anger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!, May 23, 2007
This review is from: The Freedom from Depression Workbook (Minirth Meier New Life Clinic Series) (Paperback)
I am a 20 yr old college student who has struggled with episodes of major depression. It became very debilitating and a couple months ago I asked my parents to take me to the emergency room because of the extreme amount of emotional pain I was in. There were many days where I had to fight just to get through the day. When I was in the worst stages, I had no understanding of what was causing me to feel so miserable and stop functioning well. I had the attitude that my life was great, my depression was all chemical, a result of my genetics. While I do believe my family history is a factor, I am realizing that my life isn't perfect and there are things that I want to change about myself and how I react to certain situations and people. With the help of therapy & effexor I started to improve but still struggled. I believe this book has helped me to get over that hump, to allow me to feel myself again. I am only on the second chapter, but of all the self-help books I read this has been the best so far. I knew before that I had to make changes to get out of and stay out of my depression, but I didnt know what to change or how to do it.This book has helped me to actively look at my life, identify the problems, and it gives solutions. If you or someone you care about has depression they will likely find this book helpful.

There aren't words enough to describe how thankful I am for having read this book. The power to once again control your own life can be found in these pages. I can't see how it would not be beneficial to anyone who reads it.

This review is from: The Freedom from Depression Workbook (Minirth Meier New Life Clinic Series) (Paperback)
While no book I've read is perfect...this one is pretty darn close. The book deals with and helps you work through the common issues, causes, and emotions that stem from depression. I'd recommend this book to anyone who struggles with depression.

I have dealt with my problems for an extended time and I know much more then the basics. This book however is a really good book for someone who finds themselves clinically depressed or depressed otherwise. It covers most of what one needs to know for basic depression. It has great ideas and exercises in it if carried out can in my opinion along with help from a professional make a real difference. It gives you ideas on how to help yourself during a time most individuals are at a loss for what to do and how to handle things. I am going to add on a personal note, if you are thinking of hurting yourself or anyone else or have thoughts of suicide, I would not solely rely on this workbook. I believe at that stage you need to seek outside help, like a mental health care professional. All thoughts of suicide one may have should be taken serious and not merely dismissed. If you hear others mention feeling suicidal, one should always take the remarks serious.

These authors are inspiring. I have read several of their books and once again, they are beneficial and worth the read. They use their clinical experience to help resolve issues you may have currently. I would refer the authors to everyone.

This review is from: The Freedom from Depression Workbook (Minirth Meier New Life Clinic Series) (Paperback)
I haven't gotten all the way through the book, but so far it's a good resource. It addresses the different ways you can be depressed and helps you identify where you stand with it. Still, I don't think any book by itself is gonna solve your problems. You need a doctor you trust, too.
