4.0 out of 5 stars everything a mission based action game should be, and more.., December 28, 2003

This review is from: Freedom Fighters (Video Game)
this game is hot.

it's multi-platform, but if youre a gamecube owner looking for a killer app., this is the one. it's a breath of fresh air if you think the gamecube has too many "childish" games out on the market, and here's why:

Freedom Fighters is set in an alternative universe where the USSR wins the Cold War, and the United States loses its title as the worlds biggest, baddest country. eventually, Russia spreads its power all over the globe, and decides to conquer America, which is one of the only countries left to resist the Regime.

you play as Chris Stone, some random plumber in Brooklyn who heads off on a local job. as it turns out, the Soviets begin invasion of your country at the same time, and you get tied up in a rebel faction that just won't let the enemy take New York City over that easily. cool, right? keep reading.

the game is broken up into a series of missions. you USUALLY have the ability to do 2 or 3 missions in any order you please. each mission you do directly affects the other. for example:

one stage has a helipad guarded by russians. if you take out the helipad, copters wont be able to fly in and drop off a never-ending supply of reinforcements in OTHER stages, thus facilitating your future missions.

objectives are simple: fight your way to occupied spots on the mission map, and tear down the Soviet flag and replace it with the American flag. you may think "ah, repetitive!" but its really not, especially if youre a fan of the genre. often, stages are challenging and using your squad intelligently can be a real blast.

speaking of squads, this is how they work: you start the game off with no one, but as you do things (like blowing up helipads, setting free POW's and such) you get "charisma" points. earning more charisma increases the amount of troops you can recruit to help you fight your urban war out on the streets. you'll find recruits at the beginning of most stages, or hiding in alleys, or abandoned buildings. simply press the A button when near them and Chris will go "LET'S ROLL" or some really cool bad-ass catch phrase, and the soldier will join. you can have up to 12 guys with you at a time.

you can tell your men to defend a certain area (done with the X button), lock onto a specific target or patrol an area (with the Y button) or fall in (with the A button). the C-stick gives you a full 360 degree rotation around your character, Chris, and shooting is done with the R button. what's really awesome about Freedom Fighters is that you can climb onto LOTS of stuff--low walls, garbage bins, cars...the list goes on. whatever seems plausible, you most likely can climb. and your guys follow you!! very rarely will you find your men stuck, or ignoring your commands. one last thing. some missions may have water you can swim in, but your recruits will not follow. they'll find a way around the water and meet up with you when you tell them to fall in.

enemy AI is great in this game. the Russians seem to use the same commands you do, and you'll see a commander ordering his men to flank you, move in on your position, stand their ground, or retreat. some men hide behind mounted machine guns, and lob grenades. there are also snipers who hide out in abandoned buildings, as well as Hind helicopters and tanks that patrol certain areas of stages. vehicles like these can only be taken out with HEAVY DUTY weaponry.

in terms of weapons you recieve in the game, the list is pretty decent:

wrench (youre a plumber, hehe)
molotov cocktails
C4
grenades
9 mm pistol
colt 45 (or a gun very similar)
Ak-47
SMG rifle (fast shooting rifle)
sniper rifle
shotgun
rocket launcher
heavy machine gun

youll find stages littered with ammo and medi-kits as well. normal difficulty offers plenty of healing items, so you dont have to worry about being slaughtered. im not exactly saying Freedom Fighters is an easy game, but if you know what youre doing, it will be challenging yet enjoyable at the same time. REMEMBER! Strategy is the key!

here are some downsides to the game:

-the fact that you can't use any vehicles. stages are filled with taxi cabs, civilian cars, police cars, russian cargo trucks, etc. NONE of these can be used, but you can blow them up and use them for cover. armored cars will drive by in some stages and drop off enemy troops. these plow through you and kill you instantly if youre in the way, and once again, cannot be jacked.

-multiplayer is kinda lacking. you get 3 stages, 2 of which kinda suck. you choose either soviet or american sides, and the point to multiplayer is to hoist your flag, and KEEP it hoisted for the amount of time chosen. (can range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes) capture bunkers, and recruit men (who will continue to spawn) 2 out of the 3 stages are kind of chaotically designed. they are cluttered and often the result is frantic gunfire with little strategy involved.

-not much replay value. personally i love the game and its concept, and i will continue to play it over and over. if youre a person who beats a game and is done with it, perhaps just rent this.

-a bit short. i highly suggest playing Freedom Fighters in short bursts. its possible to play it straight through, in about, 2-3 days, but it won't be as enjoyable. do 1 campaign a day. that way, you'll enjoy using your squad strategically, and you won't simply rush through the stage gung-ho. the beauty of this game is using the squad. had Freedom Fighters been lacking this feature, it'd still be good, but not AS good.

-the game didn't come with a soundtrack CD. the music is powerful and awesome! think of Metal Gear Solid music, with a russian spin. KIND OF.

how do i sum it all up? if you like what you read, definitley get this game, or at least rent it. Freedom Fighters is squad-based action ALMOST perfected. sleeper hit of 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is perfect. Well, almost..., April 8, 2004

This review is from: Freedom Fighters (Video Game)
I bought this game not fully knowing what to expect, but to my surprise, I was EXTREMELY satisfied. I don't know why some people keep saying the game is too short, or they finished in 2 days. I can only assume that those people did not play on the Revolutionary level, as I did. True gamers only play EXTREME!

On Revolutionary level, it takes nearly half your clip to kill one person, unless you shoot them in the head, which is obviously an instant kill. The A.I. for your soldiers is pretty decent. I found that even though I tell them to follow, when danger arrives, they spring into action, going so far as to chase down the enemy. Their ability gets better later on in the game also, as you'll find that some of them are equipped with liquor bombs. This helps when dealing with those blasted armored soldiers with the heavy machine guns.

The only problems I have with this game are the hand to hand combat. All you have is a wrench. You'd think after months of fighting, Chris could learn how to fight. The computer soldiers are like trained assassins, with some of them actually doing rolls or charge attacks. At one point, I saw one of my soldiers being strangled to death by a shaded soviet that snuck up behind him. Speaking of sneaking up, the stealth on this isn't done well either. Countless times I tried sneaking up on people, and somehow they saw me anyway, even from behind walls!

Another problem is that Chris doesn't do a good job of avoiding death by his own hand. Several times I've gotten myself killed because a liquor bomb or grenade was thrown into the wall I was hiding behind instead of out the window or over the railing. He should have more sense than that.

As for the music, it is truly epic. There's a Soviet score with chorus and all that plays at the beginning and throught the game. I have to say that the overall music in this game coupled with the dialogue of your soldiers makes you feel like you are truly at war. They will have you reminiscing about the Aliens movie with lines like "Game over, man," and "What are we gonna do know?"

Finally, the secret Liberty Island level is pure crap. You will need to cheat at this point, as they actually start you off with only your wrench to fight with. This part of the game is truly a war against all odds, as the Russians hit you with tons of soldiers, aerial bombs, one chopper, and four heavily armored soldiers. The fight is so intense, that you'll see tens of dead freedom fighters sprawled all around the wreckage of lady Liberty.

Hint: Don't swim in the ice water for too long, or you'll freeze to death. And you won't get a warning about it either.

5.0 out of 5 stars War In America, November 17, 2003

This review is from: Freedom Fighters (Video Game)
I saw the reviews of this game and how good they were, but was still wondering if I should get the game because of the look of it. I had a extra $50 so I bought it and tried it out. Well I was wrong this game is awsome. I beat the game in a full day I just didn't stop. I played Monday from 4:00 to 11:00 and then Tuesday from 6:00 till 12:00 so it definetly has quite some replay value. The graphics are great and very fluid nothing hitches or glitches while playing. The voice acting and sounds of guns were top notch 100%. The game has awsome controls and great level design. You also have a branching story line were in order to get past the snipers you must get c4 in another level which is easy to access. Here is how it is designed you have a hide out place which is underground. When there you get to talk to your friends nd get free weapons of your choice. You play the game buy looking at the map on the table which shows you for instance Fire Station and Hospital. The c4 is at the Hospital and the snipers are on the Fire Station roof. You must blow up the Fire Station and raise the flag in order to continue to the next map which has new objectives. The game is not easy in parts sometime snipers, mini guns, heavly shielded Russians, tanks, helicopters, and bombs are just a few of the things that can easily kill you. The games shooting setup is great also just plain perfect. The game is worth $50 and the reviews are right on actually I would rate it higher. I would give the game a 9.5/10 it is great.Highly reccomended for a Christmas gift.
