It is worth the money I spent but it took a lot of time to set it up. They give you suggestions for what to file based on the type of information you are filing, including alternate suggestions and the ability to customize labels. If I had created a new filing system on my own, it would have taken a lot more time, it would not be as easy to maintain and would not look as nice.
I would like to have had specific suggestions for filing health insurance bills and EOB's and there are a few types of files that don't fit into a specific place. This is probably because I need to learn this system. Another thing I would like: being able to add a file without having to shift all of the tabs for that section. My temporary solution is to setup the tabs inline while I am still making changes.
The system does not file items into similar subjects, like Financial and Family and Housing. Instead, it requires you to stop and think about how long you will need to keep the info and file it in a color-coded section based on if and when you will need to purge it. The theory is that if you have papers that need to be kept forever, you'll file them in a section with other papers that will be kept forever. If you'll only need to keep them for a year or so, you'll file them with that type of papers.
In reality, this system has created a filing bottleneck for me, and I can't find (or file) much of anything.
For example, I have a medical bill that I need to file, and I pull out my filing drawer. Where does this paper go? Should I file it with monthly bills that will be (according to this system) kept for 2 years? (Wow! That's a long time!) Or should they go with medical records that will be kept forever? I now have stacks of papers that apparently didn't go in any of these. Well, mine also needs to be kept for up to 7 years in case the IRS audits me, since it was paid from my HSA account. Should that instead go in the tax file? What if I need that info to see what tests were done when I go to the Dr. next year? You see the problem.
What I've actually ended up doing is making a stack of papers that (to me) don't fit neatly into this filing system until I kiss my $42 or so goodbye and recreate my filing system YET AGAIN to go with my actual life.
When I get a mortgage bill, I want to be able to file it with the other bills under "Housing - Mortgage Bills" category. The pest control bill goes under "Housing - Pest Control".Read more ›
What you get: Labels for your files and a step by step method for getting a handle on organizing them. You do not get the files or tabs. On amazon the files will cost you around $35. There are plenty of vids on the internet that demonstrate their system of organizing your files. I would look at them before buying any filing system.
Me I first got my ideas for organizing my files from Money Magazine way back in the 1980's. This product is an improvement over mine but it is taking a while to adapt to their way of filing.
Five stars for this product for people who need a place to start and four for those of us who already have a system in place and want to improve it.
i thought, "how can some file tab system thing be so awesome?"
but it IS awesome.
i found out about Freedom Filer from a blog called Unclutterer.
i trust the writer of this blog; everything she says in her blog makes sense.
so we took a half a day over the holiday to freedom filer-ize our filing cabinet.
you DO need to make sure you have the proper tabs & enough hanging files before you get started.
yeah, this system costs $40 or whatever, but it is so worth it. i've always been pretty good about filing, but now my files are on the 2nd floor (not the 1st floor which i prefer for convenience) and i am way more slackadaisical about filing, and my files have degenerated in upkeep. i've also moved in with the boyfriend, gotten married, and moved houses 2ce into bigger spaces, thus acquiring more stuff and more papers to file. the hubby has adhd so he never files s***, & if he does, it is in all the very wrong places from what is marked on the tab. But when we switched over to the freedom filer (which we did together as it was a large undertaking & something we both needed to learn & understand), he became very organized & particular abt the files. and the other day i actually caught him filing something (hoorayyy!!) *and* in the right folder (double hoorayyy!!)!! This is impressive. And i blame it on the Freedom Filer.
so thank you, brilliant folks of freedom filer. i appreciate it. being organized & knowing you can go find some paper right when you need it feels really awesome.
