Takes place towards the secret missons of Wing Commander 1,
By A Customer
This review is from: Freedom Flight (Wing Commander) (Mass Market Paperback)
Finnaly! Something about WIng Commander that is not circled around Christopher Blair. Austrailian pilot Ian "Hunter" St. John is the kind of pilot who will go against odds and fight a fleet of Kilrah pilots by himself! and succeeds! But this time he is caught up in something that even he is afraid of. A race of bird like aliens called Firekkans are going to sign a treaty with the Terran Confederation, but the Kilrathi are planning to invade the sector and go on a killing spree for some religous reason dealing with the Kilrathi war god Sivar. What is going to happen? you are going to have to read to out.

Not the greatest, but it is still Wing Commander...,

I've never played the first Wing Commander, so Freedom Flight gave me an insight into what the first installment of the game series was like. The space battles were not great, however, they were a little mediocre, but over all the book was pretty good, but nowhere near my favorite in the series.

Enter the Wing Commander universe and enjoy every line.,

What makes a book great is how it's writer accomp- lishes a certain goal. And this book is great from all aspects: Two dimensional PC game heroes become multi-dimensional and the characterisations are in depth, not too much though to alter the character of the book (viz from sci-fi space adventure to psychological thriller). Then the scenes flow, not too fast (not in a movie type style) but have a certain tempo that makes the book flow without the so called "readers' stress". The authors' language is picturous and simple, avoiding too much litera- ture in shake of steady flow and positioning of the reader right were the scenes are drawn. The plot on the other hand is simple and straightfor- ward, not original, yet it holds the twists that make the reader wanna go on reading the next scene or chapter. Taking into consideration that this book is written in a custom way (meaning that the authors were surely given the plot hints and some of the back- and side story) it is not a novelised script (with all the defects meant) but a well conceived novel that can also stand alone, without any sponsorpship. Yet, we, the Wing Commander fans are thankfull to this sponsorship. Finally, the book becomes an essential to all Wing Commander fans, as it is a job very well done.

Space adventure in the Wing Commander universe.,

Freedom Flight is set during the Secret Missions 2 add-on disk to the original Wing Commander game, which deals with the entry of the avian Firekkans into the Terran Confederation, but the Kilrathi show up in the middle of a holy war.
The action centers around Ian "Hunter" St.John, an Austrailian pilot who's a character in the game. This book gives lots of background details and helps to flesh out the personalities of all the Wing Commander characters, and gives a look into the culture of the Kilrathi, since that one of the book's co-writers actually worked on the game.
The plot follows Secret Missions 2 almost exactly, so veteran players will find not much new here, but it is a good, fast read, and hey, it's Wing Commander!
Overall, I reccomend that fans of the Wing Commander games and anybody into military sci-fi check it out.

Good but not like the others,

That is probably because of the other authors. A disreputable gang of misfits comprised of Ralgha nar Hhallas, Captain K'Kai of Firekka, Captain Ian St. John, and Rikik fly among the stars on a mission to save the world. Well ,maybe this inaccurate they are on a mission to save ONE world from the incrouchment of the Kitty Cats. My favorite charecter is Hunter(Ian St. John) and since this book deals largly with his(and his new found favorite beverage of chocie) I was not disappointed. As in all other Wing Commander book this one also provides great space battles and wonderful charecter development. This is perfect for all you diehard fans out there.

With the exception of the rescue scene, this book had little to offer except some well-done humor. The action isn't there and I only felt concern for one of the characters (ironicly, she died)...The best is still Fleet Action...
