This is a fantastic album by one of Rock and Rolls best kept secrets. If you think that Melanie is all about Brand New Key or Candles in the Rain - then you are in for a huge surprise. Fresh - upbeat - and those amazing vocals all deliver on this album. Not a wasted moment. If you want to hear what someone that has been around the business for 40 plus years can turn out - then get a copy of this album - it is money well spent.

MELANIE - The force to be reckoned with,
By Charles - Music Lover (Phoenix, AZ, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Freedom Knows My Name (Audio CD)
"Freedom Knows My Name" is perhaps Melanie's finest album, on several levels. The vocals (both lead and background) are top notch. Melanie was at the peak of her vocal powers in the early '90s, 25 years after the start of her career. Background vocals are provided by Melanie's children Beau Jarred, Leilah and Jeordie Schekeryk, as well as Jess Leary, Michael Beuchard, and Melanie. The musicianship is top rate as well, reuniting Melanie with Sal Ditroia, who performed on her early Buddah records. Other musicians include Tim Franklin, Mark Prator, Jess Leary, and Melanie. Of course, the album was produced by Melanie's husband, Peter Schekeryk.
Melanie wrote or co-wrote (with David Bruen) many of the songs on the album. Best known as a songwriter, Melanie is an incredible interpreter. Songs by Cheryl Wheeler, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan mix beautifully with songs by lesser-known songwriters such as Barbara Keith, Gary Burr, and Jim Photoglo. On the album's opening track, "Estate Sale" by Cheryl Wheeler, Melanie muses about "going through dead people's houses." Melanie shows her whimsical side and even pokes fun at herself, singing the refrain from "Brand New Key" at the song's end. Melanie also includes Wheeler's beautiful love song, "Arrow," and it is a definitive performance. Melanie takes on Barbara Keith's "Detroit Or Buffalo" for the second time (originally recorded on her 1982 album "Arabesque"), and makes the song her own. There is a radical re-interpretation of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" as a rock song, and a quasi-acoustic tribute to Jimi Hendrix in "Purple Haze." Melanie's original songs are equally impressive. "I Will Get Over" is an inspirational song offering hope and optimism in the face of adversity. "Freedom Knows My Name" is about the wandering spirit in all of us. "Wear It Like A Flag" was referred to by Village People alumni Randy Jones and co-writer Mark Bego in their book "Macho Man" as the best gay anthem ever recorded. It is a driving, self-affirming statement of pride in one's self and ability to love. "Tonight's the Kind Of Night" is a rarity - an original Christmas song that is memorable. (Melanie also included the song on her album of Christmas songs, "Antlers.") "Freedom Knows My Name" is one of Melanie's most cohesive and expertly performed albums.
