5.0 out of 5 stars Ferrick is Absolutely Amazing
On a budget of only $5000, Melissa Ferrick teams up again with friend and bassist Marika Tjelios to produce her second LP with W.A.R. which has, as expected, captured her vocal, songwriting, and guitar-playing talents within her fantastic folk rock sound. The album's title track, "Freedom", is the gate and theme of the album, which is explored further and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but not quite Ani Difranco
Melissa Ferrick has a good album here and I will probably buy another one after this experience. Quite frankly though, I had some trouble getting right into it because it doesn't seem much like she's quite into it. The personality and heart comes through a little bit undynamic.

If you want the power, poetry and musicianship kicked up a notch though, click on over to...

On a budget of only $5000, Melissa Ferrick teams up again with friend and bassist Marika Tjelios to produce her second LP with W.A.R. which has, as expected, captured her vocal, songwriting, and guitar-playing talents within her fantastic folk rock sound. The album's title track, "Freedom", is the gate and theme of the album, which is explored further and further down the road on tracks like "Some Kinda Nerve", and "Win 'Em Over". The melodious "Blind Side" and "North Carolina" will have you singing along in no time at all. "Freedom" is a must for any Ferrick fan, and a great starter for those who haven't been exposed to this one-of-a-kind talent. This album earns an anticipated 5 stars for Melissa's unique style and penning such a great anthem of herself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very engaging CD, February 5, 2002

This is a good CD. Not in any way perfect or timeless or brilliant, but it'll definitely be worth your money and time spent listening. The upbeat songs are my favorite - Blind Side, North Carolina and Some Kinda Nerve. They really get you going and inspire you to sing right along with her.
She's got a voice that's a cross between Ani Difranco and Alanis Morissette. Very strong but nothing all that unique. Although the arrangements are sort of simple, the guitar playing is good. For what it's worth, this has inspired me to purchase another of her CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful and moving, February 23, 2001

I had heard some of Melissa's older stuff and liked it, but was not blown away or anything. Then I saw her live and I haven't been the same since. If you want to see a powerful live performance, do all you can to see this woman in concert! I bought this CD after that experience and have been enjoying its subtleties and interesting nuances ever since. Her music has matured and become much more interesting (in my opinion) in the past couple years, starting with this album. This is my favorite of all of her albums (although I am really looking forward to the new one that is coming out soon!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom, May 28, 2000

I love this CD! I am a new fan and can't get enough. She has such a unique style. She is one of the most talented singers, songwriters and musicians I have ever heard (the TOTAL package). If you enjoy listening to music that is open, honest and real you will love this too. This woman holds back nothing! I especially like "This is love", "Drive" and "Hold on" (which has such an infectious beat). Talk about gutsy...that song "Drive" is amazing. I can't wait to see her perform live.

Freedom is an astoundingly good album. I was only recently introduced to her work, and I'm extremely impressed. If you get the opportunity to see her live, by all means do it. I bought the album after seeing her incredible live show at Mary Washington College. It was a small venue, and judging by the quality of her work, I feel very lucky to have experienced her show in such an intimate setting. I have to believe that she'll soon be moving on to a higher level of popularity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought it, Heard it, Loved it, Saw her!, September 7, 2000

I wrote a review of this soon after buying this album. However, I think the need to write another review is needed. I just saw her in concert for the first time. Amazing. She has a lot of fun playing her songs on stage, and the audience can't keep from being enchanted by her music (her eyes too!). She played a lot of music from her FREEDOM album, (she even did a cover of Train's "Meet Virginia") and she said that a DOUBLE-LIVE CD set will be coming out in a month or two. After the show, I spoke with her and she said that she's done with her WAR contract and will be starting her own label called "Write (or right?) On Records". Also, she mentioned she doesn't get a dime from any of her CD sales at all unless they're purchased at her shows or on CDBaby-dot-com. Enough about all the info, all in all it was a great show and I can't wait to see it again. She has a lot of talent and a growing audience (people were filtering in 1/2 way through the show to see where this cool music was coming from!) and she continues to expand her musical talents (you can tell since "Massive Blur") and songwriting power. Melissa ROCKS.

This is one of the albums you love the first time you hear it. Melissa Ferrick is a truly amazing artist. She is one of those musicians you need to get out and see live ASAP because, before you know it, she's gonna be huge! Her music transcends sexuality, race, and age - it speaks to all of us in one way or another.

Melissa Ferrick is a singer-songwriter with so much talent. You will probably love her to DEATH and she will become your new favorite if you like Ani Difranco, Joules Graves, veda hille, sinead o'conner, tori amos, etc. etc.. You get the point....she RAGES and it is a beautiful thing. This is her newest album and it is one of her best! All the songs are really good, many instant classics to womanhood and fierceness! Bravo!
