Product Description

Jefferson Starship's Freedom At Point Zero offered a new harder rock approach to their successful formula with Mickey Thomas, as Jefferson Airplane alumni Grace Slick and Marty Balin pursued solo careers. This new incarnation proved to be a solid success on the charts, as the 1979 masterwork became a smash, thanks to the help of their classics "Jane" and "Rock Music." Grace Slick later returned and is featured on 1982's blockbuster Winds Of Change, featuring hits like "Be My Lady" & "Out Of Control." Now impeccably remastered, this Friday Music deluxe set offers some of their finest music ever!

Review

It's a little odd that Friday Music paired "Freedom at Point Zero" with "Winds of Change," which were not consecutive albums ("Modern Times" was released between these two), which they've inexplicably tied together in a 2 cd set with Nuclear Furniture. It clearly would have made more sense to release "Freedom/Modern" as one set and "Winds/Nuclear" as another. This not only would keep the chronological order intact, but would be more cohesive as a project...since you'd see the evolution in their sound from album to album.

Beyond that, the packaging is disappointing. It includes no liner notes whatsoever and simply a fold-out that includes both cds. Friday Music must recognize that most Jefferson Starship fans (the only people who would buy this) likely already have these songs on MP3. A huge upside to buying actual CDs these days are getting liner notes and album artwork. That is severely cut off with this set (non of the artwork is included at all for "Winds of Change" except a mini version of the album cover on the back of the digi-pack. The digi-pack format is no excuse...plenty digipacks have been produced with detailed liner notes. These weaknesses are not endemic to Friday Music---their treatment of Starships No Protection/Love Among the Cannibals was very well done (including all liner notes and album art!).

With all that said, let's talk about the albums. If you are fan of 80's-era Starship (i.e. primarily Mickey Thomas), both of these albums have tracks that are noteworthy and underappreciated. They definitely have a harder edge than a lot of the mid-80's Starship fare. Highlights include "Winds of Change," "Keep on Dreamin," "Can't Find Love," and "Jane.

This was Mickey Thomas's debut album with Jefferson Starship and he knocked it out of the park. The concert tour for this album release was also awesome. A bit of a change from the band with Grace Slick but I truly enjoyed this. My favorite track has to be Jane.

This is one of my favorite Jefferson Starship Albums. An earlier vintage during some of their great years Starship pounded out this album with triple volume guitar chords so overwhelming they seem to have a soaring quality. In the middle of the album preceeded by the sound of thunder and rain comes a chilling song with the lyrics "I feel like i've lived my life long, just waiting for this day to dawn" that song is one of the best rock and roll songs I've ever heard. I give it my highest vote. You won't be sorry believe me!
