Book Description

April 15, 2002
A weary world revels in the hope that the global war on terrorism nears an end just as the true enemy steps out from the shadows. Chinese premier, An Lolo, has been the real evil financing and supporting terrorist leaders and their international networks. China strikes a devastating and deadly blow on United States soil as its first step toward taking control of the government and destroying the American way of life. Agent Trevor Brice has only days to uncover the secret to Lolo’s power then thwart the next attack and eliminate the threat. But, the secret to Lolo’s power is hidden in the most unlikely place, inside Hawaii’s most active volcano, Kilauea. To learn the truth, Brice must face off against Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire. She erupts in fury over the invasion of her sacred home, sending Brice into the fight of his life. He must escape her violent earthquakes, an ocean of red-hot lava and a harrowing 40-mile subterranean journey, with only a fist full of flares, a keen mind and a beautiful scientist by his side.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

When I read Freedom’s Menace for the first time, my immediate impression was, "Wow!" thus making the decision to publish this extraordinary work an easy one. It has been a while since I found an author committed to the writing and telling a full-bodied story, one with a national syllabus for domination, and non-stop action and adventure. W. Laurence Willis demonstrates his marvelous ability to create an imaginative tale of international stratagem, super egos and breathtaking scenery. Freedom’s Menace provides the reader with an amazing insight into the people, politics and the global forces that circulate throughout today’s world.

W. Laurence Willis has revealed an amazing insight into the politics and global forces that circulate throughout today’s world. As we look back in horror to the events of 9-11, we continue to ask ourselves how this could have happened. While Freedom’s Menace did not predict the attacks on New York and Washington it certainly provides the reader an insight into the minds of those wishing to destroy the American way of life. The central character, Trevor Brice, a former military officer and committed patriot, stands squarely in the path of evil where he will defend and protect to the death, the freedoms we so cherish.

From the Author

For me, the author, bringing Freedom’s Menace to print was an amazing journey. Following months of writing and rewriting, I completed the novel in early August of 2001. A few weeks later, I boarded a flight to the Maui Writer’s Conference, arguably the best conference of it kind in the United States. I was filled with all the hopes and dreams of any fledgling author and returned even more enthused than when I left. Then came September 11th. After a few days, still reeling from the shock we all felt, I began to reflect on this story I had just written. Freedom’s Menace deals with a terror attacked on the United States and a Chinese leader bent on squashing the America way of life in favor of his own. For the next few months, the manuscript sat, collecting dust, as I debated the suitability of publishing such a work. As the scenes on television morphed from New York devastation into the desolate landscape of Afghanistan, I understood that Freedom’s Menace was about the American spirit not its destruction.

Freedom’s Menace is the first in a series, each set on the Islands of Hawaii. I chose this location for many reasons, not the least of which, it is the birthplace of my wife. The Hawaiian Islands are extremely diverse, each possessing a unique personality. This uniqueness provides the perfect setting for my stories. It also provides the opportunity for you, the reader, to take a virtual tour of this marvelous land. If, after reading Freedom’s Menace, you feel an extreme pride in our country and are ready to hop the next flight to Honolulu, then I’ve done my job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here's one for the Beach!, June 27, 2003

This review is from: Freedom's Menace (Hardcover)
This is an excellent summer read, especially if you're going to Hawaii. Freedom's Menace is set on the Big Island and centers around the Kilauea volcano. Not only is this story action packed, I also learned a lot. I like a good mix of reality with my fiction. This is a well constructed, seamless novel.

Highly recommended!

Excellent effort for a first time novelist. I would have given it 5 stars, but the start was a bit slow. Not to worry, the author makes up for it in spades with a thrilling ride through a volcano. Yes, inside a volcano. I'm heading for Hawaii to view this first hand. I vote this work "a must read" and recommend it to all my friends.
