Liege Lord's powerful debut, August 27, 2010
This review is from: Freedom's Rise (Audio CD)
1985's Freedom's Rise was the debut album from US power metal band Liege Lord. The band had an uncompromising NWOBHM-worshipping power metal sound, which was very much like a cross between Helstar and Obsession or perhaps Omen meets Crimson Glory. This is classic power metal like you could only find in the mid 1980's.
Freedom's Rise is a bit rawer than later Liege Lord albums (
Burn to My Touch (Reis) and
Master Control), but that's part of what makes it an underground classic. It's just a fierce, uncompromising heavy metal album with a powerful spirit.
While the band was successful enough to record two more albums, both for Metal Blade, it wasn't able to survive the 1990's, which was a notoriously difficult time for power metal bands. If you're a serious fan of classic heavy metal, particularly the early US power metal scene, you need some Liege Lord in your collection.
NOTE: Freedom's Rise was never officially released on CD. Keep that in mind if you see the disc at some unusually high price. I'm not knocking bootlegs, since that's the only way to hear this lost classic, but you should pay accordingly.
