5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to get started with freeform crochet
I read through most of this book the day I got it because it was that good. There is a section on color theory that helps you choose your yarns, and there are clear instructions on how to put together your "scrumbles" - which are the building blocks for freeform crochet. It is more step-by-step than other books on freeform, which is good for those who need it. The...

3.0 out of 5 stars Freeform Knitting and Crochet (Milner Craft Series)
I read the earlier reviews on this book and knowing Jenny Dowde's reputation and work, I bought it without hesitation. I consider myself a beginner, and after messing around to see what I could do with my scraps, wanted something to help me make more "wearable art". But this is not the book for that. Readers who know any color theory will be disappointed at the depth of...

The pictures are beautiful and inspiring, too. I'm a long-time crocheter, but I'm new to freeform. This book inspired me to work on my first freeform project - a vest. Crocheters with a desire for more creative expression will love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Go For it!, October 25, 2004
This review is from: Freeform Knitting and Crochet (Milner Craft Series) (Paperback)
I love this book, its broken down the walls surrounding the mystery of how to make my own free form garments and helped ease my fear that i can't be that creative! Its well written, with great ideas for projects, even with directions on how to make your own buttons, and has the best discussion on color and how to use and mix it that i have seen. This is the perfect way to use up small bits of left over yarns, especially all the great new funky yarns i can't resist.

I bought this book without looking inside, and while I really like the technical information in the book, I have a little bit of a hesitation about recommending it wholeheartedly. I think for an absolute beginner, this would be a fabulous book. It goes over everything from color design to translating that to garments. There's a short tutorial on stitches, and a gallery of basic patterns that you can customize.

For someone who's already had a fair bit of color theory, and who may just need more of the nuts-and-bolts type "here's some more stuff you can do", I think that section could have been expanded quite a bit. Overall, I'm very pleased with the book, I just wish there was more component piecing information/stitches to use. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone just getting into this type of thing, however, and consider its purchase money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs to add this book to their crochet library!, September 21, 2004

From the creative patterns to the detailed stitch instructions, I found this book to be one of the most comprehensive freeform crocheting and knitting books available right not. This book is not only for freeformers but for anyone who appreciates crochet work and creating individual projects. It addresses the fear people have of giving into their "creative" sides. Everything is presented in a logical format without too much "over your shoulder" instruction. Even if you have never tried or heard of freeform crochet, you will be inspired to take your craft into the most wonderful direction.

I read the earlier reviews on this book and knowing Jenny Dowde's reputation and work, I bought it without hesitation. I consider myself a beginner, and after messing around to see what I could do with my scraps, wanted something to help me make more "wearable art". But this is not the book for that. Readers who know any color theory will be disappointed at the depth of that section. And while the construction techniques were helpful, they didn't address making complex garments. I love Jenny Dowde, but this book didn't help me to do something more than I would have attempted before I read it.

I certainly feel out of sync with the other reviewers, many of whom sound very experienced. I think it would be excellent choice for anyone who hesitates to begin a project that isn't all planned out - Dowde is an excellent teacher. And perhaps Freeform Knitting requires more changes to your normal methods than Freeform Crochet. But I would not recommend this book to anyone who crochets, feel comfortable experimenting on their own after looking at pictures on-line, and wants a book to help them make more finished and complex garments.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY COOL book for anyone who knits or crochets!, January 13, 2006
This review is from: Freeform Knitting and Crochet (Milner Craft Series) (Paperback)
I was a little skeptical about how good this book would be, but boy was I pleasantly surprised! As someone who is more of a "left-brained" knitter and crocheter, I didn't know if I would ever want to do any of the projects in this book. However, even a left-brainer such as myself can get creative with the patterns and ideas in this book. Just like "Hip to Crochet," this is a book that inspires me to pick up my often-ignored crochet hook, in addition to my well-used knitting needles. I like this book so much that I just bought one for my sister who is even more left-brained than I am!

5.0 out of 5 stars Freeform Knitting and Crochet, February 20, 2007
This review is from: Freeform Knitting and Crochet (Milner Craft Series) (Paperback)
This book is great! You do not need any other book to teach you this technique. If you can only do knit, purl & simple single crochet or you are an experienced "stitcher", this book will allow your "free spirit" to emerge.
The book covers everything from color spectrums to endless possibilities for using your finished art form pieces. Nothing you do is a mistake and I love the freedom of creating my own "yarn sculpture".

first of all - I like the book and I am glad I bought it. Personally, I could have done without the colour theory in the first chapter, but this was because I was impatiently waiting to get started with the knitting. The ideas are wonderful and great for using up these little bits of yarns left over from previous projects. Once you get started it is hard to stop and the ideas keep coming.Only downside: you NEED to go back to the yarn shop - no way do you have enough different threads at home :-), but since when is that a problem? llFreeform Knitting and Crochet (Milner Craft Series)
