4.0 out of 5 stars Great campy Sci-Fi
I saw this originally at the movies, picked up the laser disk years ago, and now the DVD. It's one of my favorite campy Sci-Fi flicks. I saw this originally at the movies, picked up the laser disk years ago, and now the DVD. It's one of my favorite campy Sci-Fi flicks. Big name actors in second rate rolls, pretty good special effects, a decent plot. Mick Jagger as a merc with plenty of gadgets and bizarre vehicles is a good opponent to "freejacked" race car driver Emilio Estevez. Estevez is grabbed through time at the moment of death (a freak race accident) - in a practice called FreeJacking. The result is supposed to be a flatlined brain with a healthy body. The wealthy few that can afford this service can then download their own consciousness into the new, young, healthy body. Immortality of a sort. Well, Estevez is not braindead (not in the movie anyway), and winds up as the prize in a power struggle between the two most powerful people on the planet - the #1 and #2 execs at the company that runs the whole FreeJack biz. A fun ride and worth the bucks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing achievement, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Freejack (DVD)
Somehow, it's possible to put Emilio Estevez, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins together in a movie, and get a mediocre result. I didn't know it could be done.

Estevez (as Alex) and Russo (as Julie) are madly in love. She gives him a kiss for luck and he's off in the Formula 1 racer. Next, the car goes airborne, explodes in a ball of flame, and Alex is --

A "freejack," an escaped body, a piece of property. The time travel thingie yanked him out of the car at the last instant, into the future, where his strong young body was harvested to house some aging, sick rich guy (Hopkins). Problem is that Alex isn't through with that body yet. The rest of the movie is a gun battle/chase scene (he's a race driver, remember?) with Mick Jagger as the bounty hunter. Jagger does a fair job of sneering, and it's probably good that he was called on for little else.

Effects are minimal. There are lots of cars and armored vehicles running around, put together with colorful but cheesy effect. There are a few humorous moments, like the nun or the recipe for river rat. There's a happy ending. That's enough to make it passable amusement. If that's all you wanted, it may meet your needs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hollywoodie-ed ......................, September 8, 2008
By
MovieMusic (Nautical Newport) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Freejack (DVD)
It looks great, it's fast-paced, it has good actors, but it's a turkey.
What went wrong?

Firstly, one of those actors - Rene Russo - doesn't have her heart in it. And since she's the love interest, that kills the love story. There's been plenty of negative comment about Mick Jagger in this, but he's fine. It seems most people just can't get their heads around such a famous rock star being an actor.

The major problem is the script, which probably had merit when written, but ended up after the rewrites making very little sense. You can watch this movie and enjoy the ride, but at the end you just ask yourself, "What the hell was that?".

None of it makes much sense. Every scene has been designed as a photo opportunity to make the film's technicians look good on show reels - and they do. But the price paid is to alienate the audience from any identification or lasting enjoyment.

Ultimately,the producers Hollywoodie-ed this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Comes FREE For a Freejack!, June 19, 2001
This review is from: Freejack (DVD)
Emilio Estives is a race car driver. In fact, he's a great race car driver with a beautiful girlfiend (Renee Russo) and a typical slimeball manager who would sell the guy's shoelaces, if he could make a profit. On the day of The Big Race, Emilio flies down the track then up into a billboard! The crash is stupendous and they can't even find a pinky finger after the flames and dust settle.

Meanwhile, back in the future, good old Mick "the lips" Jagger is preparing to snatch Emilio from the past - milliseconds before the fatal crash. Why? you want to know? Wellllllll, it seeams that man has succeeded in two major areas - he has totally poluted the world to the point that most people are deseased and he has created the Cosmic Switchboard where a person's "being" can be transferred to another host body, thereby creating virtual immortallity. The plot thickens! But, it's still your basic love triangle with a bit of power playing and sneacky backstabbing. Bad guys turn out to be good guys, good guys end up being barbequed because they're really bad guys, and the hero gets the girl, the money, and the power!

5.0 out of 5 stars A novel sci-fi film with twists, March 15, 2011
This review is from: Freejack (DVD)
This is a science fiction film with a novel approach, suspense, and plot twists. Someone in the future hired people to hijack Alex, a handsome, healthy, much loved racetrack driver and haul him eighteen years into the future. The plan is to simulate his death, rescue him without anyone noticing, and bring him to the future unconscious. Matters go wrong; Alex wakes up in the future conscious, and escapes. He has no idea what happened to him and where he is. He looks around and finds that he is in his city after a cataclysmic revolution, people look sick, and move about with guns. They have been affected by the carbon dioxide and other dangerous chemicals in the air. The film is filled with chases and crashes in futuristic vehicles and pursuits by foot with the firing of futuristic guns.

Alex and his girl friend had been very happy together. When he realizes that he is in the future, he looks for her. He discovers that he was brought to the future by an unknown official of a company. She is an executive of the company. She meets him and has mixed feelings. She is wrestling with the idea that she had thought he was dead for eighteen years, she now has a high-level job, and she is now eighteen years older, while he is the same age he was eighteen years ago.

Who is behind the plot to haul Alex into the future? Why did he or she do it? What will happen to this person? Why of all people from the past was Alex chosen to be high jacked? How can Alex relate to his girl friend who is now eighteen years older, and can she relate to him? Does love endure such time travel? Can Alex get back to his own time? Will he leave his girl friend behind? If he does what happens to her?

The action: F1 racing, futuristic cars & chases, space guns & gear. The romance between Emilio & Rene. The psychedelic images at the end, etc. Definitely worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Futuristic, Sci-Fi/Thriller/Drama, exciting..., January 17, 2003
This review is from: Freejack (DVD)
I liked this movie. I am biased. I like any movie with Anthony Hopkins in it, but this one was fast paced, lots of superb special effects, and had a good plot. A racing car driver dies in a fiery car crash and is propelled into the future by a man who wishes to purchase his body, a common practice in this future world. He (the racing car driver) is called a FreeJack, and everyone is on the hunt when he escapes the brain/mind transfer and runs for his life to find the one girl who he knows will save (and believe) him. Anthony Hopkins plays a small role, it is he who wants the body, but he plays it excellently. Emilio Estevez and Mick Jagger are fabulous as virtual enemies playing spy vs. spy. There is surprise after surprise in this movie, and just a hint of mind games.
