Loved It,

This review is from: Freelance Confidential (Paperback)
I think the previous reviewer might have misunderstood the intent of the author. Personally, I read the entire book in one sitting, and enjoyed it immensely. Rather than dishing out generic advice, Amanda reveals *exactly* how every-day freelancers work and live. Why take the advice of one person, when you can instead learn from hundreds of freelancers? That's exactly what Amanda offered in her book - and I loved it!

Not a lot of useful content - not really what was advertised,

This review is from: Freelance Confidential (Paperback)
I was really looking forward to the release of this book and was anticipating a how-to book full of tips and tricks on being a successful freelancer, possibly even some things that are lesser known, as the cover promises. For the price I paid, I received way fewer pages than expected, and the majority of the book is statistics and graphs and explanations of said graphs. Things like, the ratio of men to women who are in the freelancing world, how much your average illustrator makes, etc. I did not feel that with the majority of the book being statistics and the little meat it had on tips and tricks (which were very common sense that even a novice would probably know already) made this a good purchase.
What little actual advice this book offers could have come from someone who has only just observed freelancers of all types on the most basic of levels, not necessarily as someone who is living the life. I will say that the book does contain quite a few useful links to (free!) blogs and websites for folks who *are* living the life of a successful freelancer, but I'm not sure I was expecting to pay for a book that at best pointed me to other sources for the information the book claimed to contain. It's like paying for a Google search. I feel that it is better suited for people who are just entering the freelancing world and are willing to pay for shoulder-pats and reassurance of just how many people are doing it and what your odds are for being successful, but not to use it as a guide of how to get started or maintain your already established freelance business. |
