Even more fun with modern multiplayer updates,

Years after it's release, Freelancer remains a popular multiplayer platform with 600+ daily players from around the world. The most popular community modification to Freelancer is called Discovery, which adds dozens of new systems, ships, factions, and functionality to the game engine. Play as police or military for your favorite house, or be that truly evil character you could never been in the single player module. Fly previously locked ships such as tranports, gunboats, cruisers, and battleships. Simply purchase a copy of Freelancer then use your favorite search engine to search for "Discovery PTC" to get more information about the Discovery mod, and one of the most popular Discovery multiplayer servers, Discovery PTC. We look forward to seeing you in game!

When I was a kid one of my favorite games was Wing Commander: Privateer. It was the best of the Wing Commander series and I played it several times over until it no longer worked on whatever computer I owned, but I haven't been able to find a game since to replace it. Until now.
Freelancer it a great space adventure game without all the muck of being a flight simulator, which I am not very fond of. The only reason I didn't give the game five stars is because it has some long cut scenes of you attacking bases on foot, but doesn't actually let you go into FPS mode to fight the bad guys yourself. That aside, I love this game.

I played and finished this game when it came out a number of years ago. I really liked it then. Only one of its kind. Since then, I gave it away and went on to other things. I recenlty bought it again for the same reason. AS far as I can tell, it's the only one of its kind. The only thing out there that's close is EVEonline, which is a MMO. But even that, I'm not quite as happy w/ as this. The two main reasons, this has no monthly fee to play, and fighting is in realtime. I'm not totally crazy about the game b/c it does get pretty redundant. Also, I would've liked to have had more things to do at the various bases, and have more things to do w/ my money besides buy bigger ships and more weapons. I think if they could ever work on those areas and make a Freelancer2, it would be a fantastic game. Some things I do like about it: Pretty easy learning curve, lots of systems to explore, little hidden things here and there in the systems that make it fun to fly around and see what I can find. I'm hoping someday someone will make the game w/ all the components I want in it.

I've played through the game twice, and then another 3 or 4 times with different 3rd party mods. I truly enjoy the game play, can play for hours and not get tired of it. And the online play opens it up even more!
Some Pros to consider: Fully customizable; you can get a huge assortment of ships and weapons, there are even weapons not part of the game play that are rare and powerful! You don't have to make money legally. You can pirate off of the infinite supply of NPC ships. You can make money from cargo, or from fighting/missions. Online play is great and allows for some fun times. Combat is intuitive and easy to learn. A few cons: Unlike what the adds say, you CANNOT be EITHER good or evil! You can do evil things, and have people hate you, but the main story line is based only in the good. There are some situations and items that one would have to "cheat" to know exist, such as the type 10 weapons. Overall i do love to play, online and off. The single player takes over a day of in game time, and that's if you rush it, knowing what to do, where to go, and how to get there.

I was skeptical when I first heard of this game but once I started playing it I was hooked. The story is engaging and the graphics are good. I was impressed by the amount of explorable space, the breathtaking scenes shown in each system and the fact that you can continue to play this game for practically forever, thanks to random encounters as well as the many trade missions you can complete. I think the best thing about this game is the mods though, adding mods means adding repeatability, and there are TONS of mods. I would recommend this game to fans of space based games. I would also like to recommend that any prospective buyer invest in a good joystick, it will make the game even better. Logitech makes some good (and cheap) joysticks.

Freelancer is still Fantastic!!!,

Yes Freelancer is an older game. No there is still no games that can completely replace its fantastic game play and space sim environment. The graphics are a bit dated... but only a bit and the single player game is somewhat basic compared to some newer games (although some newer space games have crap storylines). The power of Freelancer is the multiplayer side and the community of players who have created some amazing amazing MODs to this game supported by helpful forums and web pages.
The free to play multiplayer game starts with the player having to build up their character and gain funds and reputation by running missions, hauling cargo for trade or mining. The bast MOD I have experienced is the Discovery MOD played on the Discovery PTC server. There is at least about 25-30 other players online at any time and that number can tripple during popular times. This server is located in the US and is English language only. The rules are relaxed and players are helpful, but don't take chances with pirates, you will regret it! HA! All the files needed to MOD Freelancer are on the Discovery PTC site and within minutes you will be up and running... Enjoying your space sim multiplayer without paying a monthly fee or anything like that. Freelancer is a great backbone and a standard that current space sims (Including EVE) have still yet to meet! Go for this purchase you will get years of fun in deep space! Pros: gameplay you pilot your ship and target/fire/select your weapons (not boring like EVE) audio ship to ship NPC coms to sim traffic control and smuggling interdiction all the different systems to explore (WOW!) numerous missions trade routes mining fields and mining ships backstory and system history Great gaming community with MODS to expand multiplayer experience free multiplayer graphics are still good considering age of game Cons: basic game does not support widescreen (there are workarounds and fixes on various forums)

It was sad that Microsoft removed the multiplayer global server for this game, however, a community, [...] re-created it, and it's more populated than ever.
Still, an incredible game, if I knew, I would've got the collector's edition.

I purchased Freelancer in March 2003, and I'm still playing it. This has to be one of the greatest open-ended computer games ever made. You can be whatever you want to be; mercenary, trader, soldier or pirate. There are still many Freelancer fans, even after Microsoft ended their partnership with Digital Anvil. With the creation of many Freelancer fan clubs, you can play the vanilla (original) game or even a few Star Trek and Star Wars versions. They even have a galaxy patterned after the Simpsons. Future plans for a Freelancer sequel may not exist (for now), but the Freelancer faithful are still out there, in their homes and in cyberspace.

This is the best space trader game ever. Not because of the original game but because of all the mods available. Blaster universe mod, Discovery mod and crossfire mod. Using freelancer mod manager. There are many more mods too, even starwars mods. No game is beter. And some mod continue the story. I bought this years ago but lost it. I need to buy a new copy. I lost or traded probably. If I had all the mods back then I would still have it. The mods give the game 100% replay value due to the fact some are xml and I gave my rino freighter in the demo 100,000 cargo capacity and got 2 billion credits. New worlds to explore and galaxies and new merchandise to trade and new enimie. Mods realy help this game but most all require the original version.

Freelancer is one of my favorite games of all time. I just got into the MOD scene with Freelancer and there are so many MODs out there it's hard to choose. I would highly recommend this game to anyone that likes GOOD single player storylines, space flight/combat sims (with stunning outer space graphics), and free roaming type of games. Shame on Microsoft for not making a sequel! If you're going to buy this game I would definitely check out the various MODs that will improve the game. Google search "Moddb", you can find more information about the different Freelancer MODs.Here are some MODs that I have heard good things about: -Crossfire - The "unofficial sequel to Freelancer" << This is my favorite. But single player is A LOT harder than the original. -Discovery Freelancer -Shattered Worlds: War Torn -Freeworlds: Tides of War - A Star Wars conversion-Comes out 2012 -The UnderVerse - A Chronicles of Riddick conversion |
