Book Description

November 1995
Richard Snow wrote this novel for America's Bicentennial. His young soldier narrator's honest account of our great war for independence gives a picture of the early campaign as experienced by the thousands of innocent, untrained men who took up their muskets against "that damned fat King George" and the best battlefield army in the world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Mr. Snow has a remarkable capacity for sharply delineating character, for telling a story, and for knowing when to stop. This book is a little gem. -- W. M. Wallace, The New York Times Book Review

From the Publisher

The ribald, often coarsely outspoken narrative is lusty in the manner of realistic stories of the eighteenth century. The confusion, fear, and misery of the inexperienced soldier during battle suggests the similar feeling of the protagonist of The Red Badge of Courage.

This review is from: Freelon Starbird: Being a Narrative of the Extraordinary Hardships Suffered by an Accidental Soldier in a Beaten Army (Paperback)
I read this book a couple of years ago. It told the story of the first year of the revolution in a way that made me connect not only to the event but the men who brought off this almost miraculous victory. This is one of the best historical novels I've ever read--both moving and funny.
