This book contains over 6,000 freedmen and colored marriage records from the Sumter County, Alabama courthouse. These records represent some of the earliest records in existence on the newly freed slaves from this county. The index is alphabetica lly organized by the surnames of both brides and grooms. Dates and location of actual records are also included. The appendix section includes transcripts of handwritten license requests, parental consent to nuptials for underage parties, and miscellaneo us documents. Many of the anecdotal documents not only identify the bride and groom but their parents as well. This book is a "must have" for anyone doing genealogical research on early African-Americans from this county.

I searched for this book to no avail; but finally, I was able to purchase it. It was well worth the wait. I found two different sets of great great grandparents and a great great granduncle. If you have relatives from Sumter County, Alabama....this book is an excellent source of information.

I had already spent several years trying to get this entry to no avail. I purchased this book and there it was. The marriage took place in 1886 in Sumter County Ala.In addition I found listings of marriages of the siblings of my great grandmother. Wonderful work.
