The Freeplay Jonta Flashlight is the ultimate human powered flashlight, packed with digital features and delivering excellent beam quality, brightness and shine time performance. Built on trusted and failsafe Freeplay self-charge technology, the Freeplay Jonta incorporates state-of-the-art Luxeon 1 Watt Star LED illumination and intelligent circuitry – all without the need for replaceable batteries. Designed for absolute reliability, the self-charge system offers maximum dependability for those times when you can’t afford to be left in the dark by dead batteries. A quick wind of about 60 seconds gives approximately 10 minutes of light in energy saving mode – and you can wind again at any time for as much shine-time as you want. A charge level indicator tells you the optimal winding speed.

When fully charged, the lantern provides up to 12 hours of continuous ultra bright light. This recharge system provides an optimum charge to the batteries, ensuring superior battery performance. Microprocessor driven charge circuitry fully charges the Jonta in 6 hours. A choice of 3 light settings offers flexibility for everyday use, and emergency situations. An energy saving mode allows you to use the flashlight for extended periods at a reduced brightness, select maximum power where the ultra-bright beam is required or the flashing beacon for distress signaling. The beam is useful for illuminating surfaces up to 50 m away, and has a signal visibility over 3 km. The digital control circuit offers many other useful features including battery level indication, mode indication and a low battery warning that lets you know when to crank further to avoid being left in the dark.

Internal mechanical components are specified to industrial standards for repeated use and long life. The solid state LED has a lifetime of up to 100 000 hours, ensuring that it, like the batteries, should never require replacement. The Freeplay Jonta, incorporating Freeplay’s self-sufficient energy technology, is the most dependable performance flashlight on the market.

Do I need to do anything before I use it?

For best results, the battery requires a conditioning charge before first use, or after long periods without use. This can be done by administering several vigorous 30-second wind cycles. Alternatively this can be done by fully charging the battery using the wall adapter (if you have one). The product can, however, be used immediately in the wind-up mode if required.

How do I change the light bulb?

The light is an LED (light-emitting diode) with up to 100 000 hours of useful life and never requires replacement.

How long will a fully charged battery retain its charge?

The battery will retain about 75% of its capacity after 1 month, 55% after 2 months, 40% after 3 months and 15% after 6 months.

Can I over-wind the unit - does it ever stop you from winding?

No, you cannot over-wind the internal mechanism. It consists of simple gearing which drives the alternator, providing power to the internal battery.

Will I damage the product if I crank the handle in the opposite direction?

No, the winder handle can be cranked in both directions.

Is the product waterproof?

No, it is not waterproof. It is splash proof and will work in rainy conditions.

How long should my Jonta shine for?

With a fully charged battery, the Jonta will shine for approximately 24 hours on normal beam (Energy Saving) or 2 1/2 hours on high beam. A 30-second wind at 120 rpm will provide about 10 minutes of shine time on normal beam.

What is the indicator light for?

The indicator light is an optimum charge level indicator. This means that it will only illuminate when you are winding the handle at the best speed to generate the ideal amount of energy.

How long does it take to fully charge the battery?

Using the wall adapter, it will take about 6 hours to fully charge the battery. Or using the crank, it will take about 40 minutes, if you constantly wind at the optimum speed as indicated by the green charge level indicator.

What is the life span of the internal battery?

The internal battery is good for 500 cycles when fully charging the battery and 10 000 cycles when using the winder mechanism for 30 seconds.

The battery doesn't hold a charge any more; do I need to replace it?

Rechargeable batteries deteriorate over time, especially if drained nearly completely (to extend the life of your battery, limit how often that happens). However, in many cases they can be "conditioned" back to life. This can be done by administering several vigorous 30-second wind cycles. Alternatively this can be done by letting the product run from the battery until it stops, and then, with the product turned off, fully charging it using the wall adapter.

Product Description

Designed for absolute reliability, the Jonta offers maximum dependability. The Luxeon LED provides superior performance--visible up to 2-miles, and will never require replacement.

3.0 out of 5 stars Freeplay Jonta shine time WAY over-rated!!!!, February 27, 2010
This review is from: Freeplay Jonta Flashlight (Apparel)
Well, let me say, first of all, that this is a nicely built flashlight. It feels pretty good in the hand and doesn't look shabby in the least. That said, Freeplay has greatly exaggerated the shine time of this unit. With a full charge from the AC wall charger the longest duration of light on high power I could get was a bit less than fifteen minutes...far short of the two and a half hours they state. I returned the first Jonta I bought, thinking I had received a lemon. When the replacement arrived, however, the problem was actually a bit worse. This time I decided to take matters into my own hands and replaced the lousy stock 1300mAh NiMH pack with one rated at 2700mAh. Having done this, I now get the shine duration that Freeplay states this unit delivers out-of-box. I paid $45.99 for my Jonta. Had I paid full price, I would have been really torqued off. This experience has led me to believe that this will be the last Freeplay product I buy. I also have a Lifeline radio as well as a Baygen radio. They work fine. It is my opinion that the problem with Freeplay is that they do not seem to offer any support in the way of replacement parts for their products. For a company that advertises itself as being environmentally friendly, I find this unacceptable.

3.0 out of 5 stars It'll do, March 11, 2011

This review is from: Freeplay Jonta Flashlight (Apparel)
I was impressed with the amount of light it gives off being that it is an LED. I like the dual light level settings. However it is really big! Too big! I think that may be due to the dynamo size. Also, the time they state for 10 minutes of light with the crank is bologna! I cranked it for 2 minutes and got about 45 seconds of light on the higher setting. No where near the 10 minutes of light for a 1 minute crank on the dynamo.

3.0 out of 5 stars A strong and classic flashlight but too complicated, September 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Freeplay Jonta Flashlight (Apparel)
We use these flashlights for staff on safari in eastern Africa and have had the early model for 5 years. They are sturdy and offer good light, very good run time and quick recharge from AC. This product is very well thought out but most people will want the international (nice feature) AC charger that no longer comes with the unit. Hand cranking, while effective, is not as easy as it seems and the faceplate can lift from the body with extended cranking. The new units often do not start up without holding down the starter switch. Annoying when you are in a hurry. It does not keep a charge when stored.
