Great 2-fer,

This review is from: Freeze Frame (Audio CD)
I thought their first solo effort "L" (c1977) was a little too self-indulgent though nicely produced, and would have rated it 3 stars, but Freeze-Frame (c1978) is consistently interesting and as good as their 10CC work. Paul McCartney provides some backing vocal on the final cut but you can't recognize him due to GC's production. Overall Freeze Frame is Very interesting, lots of various instrumentation, some Gizmo, percussion, layered harmonies, interesting studio tricks, clever lyrics, and Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) also plays guitar on most tunes. So mainly on the strength of Freeze Frame I would rate this a 5-star collection.

Wow, Godley & Creme's Freeze Frame should qualify as "most underrated album from the late 70's". It's uniquely complex and whacky wrapped together as one really strange unit... and totally awesome.
The opening track "An Englishman in New York" is quite reminiscent of a Tubes song from the same year called "No Mercy". Probably just a coincidence. Anyway the lyrics are REALLY amazing, and I can't recall even the best 10cc tunes having lyrics THIS diverse and insanely all over the map! "Clues" totally reminds me of the Eno/Bowie late 70's collaboration that resulted in some really interesting pop songwriting. This album contains my vote for the number one craziest experiment EVER attempted by a rock band. Yes the Beatles have "You Know My Name/Look Up the Number", Klaatu had a few bizarre ideas of their own in the early days, Frank Zappa had his own clever brand of highly unusual moments, Captain Beefheart was just totally nuts, 10cc had their own whacky sense of humor and creative lyrics... but "I Pity Inanimate Objects" just DESTROYS everybody elses attempt at blowing us away with off the wall, nearly-unlistenable weirdness. What takes it to a whole new level of oddness, you ask? How about lyrics that ask REALLY cool questions such as "What does a room think when a couch is moved to a new location?" The lyrics are definitely not the only thing this 5-minute slab of experimentation has going for it. How about a verse melody that sounds so warped it's practically unlistenable the first time you hear it? Who ever thought to write something like *this?* Only Godley & Creme! Even Klaatu had to tip their hats to this crazy and radically different approach to writing a vocal melody. And the guitar solos that hits notes SO high that it basically sounds like saw blades clashing together! GEEZ! What a song, seriously. No, this album should NOT be forgotten the way it has been the last 30 years. Pick up Freeze Frame now and for goodness sake- don't get it confused with the J. Geils Band tune (a song I actually like by the way!)

That's the funny thing....,
This review is from: Freeze Frame (Audio CD)
that's the funny thing about music...unlike the other reviewer here , I actually liked "L" much better than "Freeze Frame"....All the quirkiness that made 10cc such a joy to listen to , with some monster time change signatures that would make Zappa jealous (Oh , by the way , Lol and Kevin pay homage to FZ in one track-----as well they should).....Great 2fer
