Book Description

New Issues Poetry & Prose August 1, 2001
Poetry. Steve Langan's brilliant first book is full of passion suffused with irony, poems cagily built to deconstruct sentimentality by using self-consciousness as a kind of comic foil. But for all the poet's clever feints and evasions, at the core of the work beats the heart of a romantic. Langan's methods are luminously impressionistic, and the poems percolate with image and materiality, inflection and the full-throated music of language. Freezing glitters with the distant light (or explosions of inner light) of a hundred small moments colliding where perception meets the self in the "unbeautiful city."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...Langan remains firmly in control of the universe of his poems, absorbing their images... creating his own peculiar mythology." -- Jacket #19-October 2002 Book review by Dave Gunton for Steve Langan's, Freezing

"These are tough, gritty, and beautiful poems. Be aware of this, reader: Freezing will set you on fire!" -- Thomas Lux

5.0 out of 5 stars Poems to Sink the Teeth Into, April 17, 2011
By
This review is from: Freezing (New Issues Poetry & Prose) (Paperback)
The poems in this collection have some serious meat to them, poems that I can sink my teeth into and chew endlessly. There is this sense of mystery for me as I read, both the kind that is revealed and the kind that is only hinted at. Mystery in the images, the rhythm, and the emotion. I found myself captivated throughout. Langan has such wonderful rhythm as well, this fluid force that drives me along. Force when shouting and even force when quiet. In short, this collection is delightful. Full bodied poems, as deep as it gets.
