4.0 out of 5 stars It's Alright, Ma (I'm only dancing)..., May 29, 2002
This review is from: Freezone 3 (Audio CD)
DJ Morpheus has a knack of putting these compilations together. He scours the globe in search of interesting acts and tracks on an annual basis, sticks them all in a melting pot, et voila! So far there are 7 releases in this series, spanning 1994 - 2001. They're excellent historical documents and great to listen to! In retrospect, Freezone volume 3 (1996) is definitely 'hippest' of the bunch. It's well arranged, laid back, features a plethora of talented & eclectic artists and doesn't sound dated, even today. The tracks/mixes are exclusive to the Freezone series, making these CDs rather collectible.

The music on this particular adventure is Drum and Bass, Trip Hop, Jungle, weirdness and even some dubby minimalism. It's all done in quite an ambient style and is very much 'Head' music, from the haunting entrance of Phume's "So many times" to JMJ & Richies "Universal Horn". Fila Brazillia's "Dozing Bulls" is a classic and Kruder & Dorfmeister's "Out of the Blue" is simply nebulous!! You only have to look at the artists that appear here to know that quality is assured.

If you like this collection then I can definitely recommend the other 6 (DJ Morpheus has also released a separate compilation "In My Bag" which I also recommend). Not all the music is from the beaten track, but then again, I like surprises. However if I could only buy one Freezone compilation then it would have to be this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Different and Great, March 11, 2008
This review is from: Freezone 3 (Audio CD)
Freezone 3, Horizontal Dancing, is an amazing compilation that includes two CDs of truly great electronic music from the mid '90s. All tracks are extremely special, and most are out-of-print.

This is a definite collector's item, as it is one of the very few compilations ever created that house an assortment of unique productions from different genres of electronica.

It is in fact a masterpiece, so do not hesitate on buying the CD, for it is out of print now.

3.0 out of 5 stars good mix, pick it up used., December 25, 2002

This review is from: Freezone 3 (Audio CD)
The freezone collection seems to ring in a bit of hip-hop, drum n'bass, expertimentalism, ambient, lounge.....and even a touch of downtempo. It's a good set really but I can't say I liked all the tracks. I'll point out some notable ones though:

Gabriell's Horns
Bulls Dozing
Universal Horn Remix
Out of the blue
The Rough with the Smooth
Tribe of Benjamin
Arizona

Well, that's not many but it's better than some of the other freezone compilations in my opinion. There are other decent tracks on this album but not good enough for me to keep the repeat button on. This compilation is great for some good background music or perhaps while you're stuck in traffic and it's raining and you're wondering where the hell you're going in life. Of course, if you're thinking that, I'd recommend the OM Lounge collection instead....but you get the point...don't you?
