1.0 out of 5 stars Lacks Clarity and Rigor
This is a poorly written book. The word 'lucid' should not be on the book jacket. Do yourself a favor and buy Anthony Kenny's introduction instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucid and interesting philosophical biography, April 19, 2000

This review is from: Frege (Past Masters) (Paperback)
This is a clear and excellent introduction to how Frege developed the ideas that he did. Until I read this short book, I knew of Frege only from his essay, "Sense and Reference", and from remarks by other writers. In Ms. Weiner's book the steps Frege took to found modern logic are laid out in an interesting and easy to follow fashion. A background in logic is not essential, though a curiosity in how modern logic developed is essential.

Frege's importance and significant contributions to philosophy are no doubt very much unappreciated by many who are interested in philosophy, but I think that books like this will make him more accessible to the public. If you want to find out why Frege has been compared to Aristotle in importance, how his ideas re-fashioned the science of logic, how he laid the foundation for the philosophy of language and helped to overthrow misguided attempts at epistemology that originated with Descartes, then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, April 23, 2000

This review is from: Frege (Past Masters) (Paperback)
This is a pretty good introduction to Gottlob Frege. I had heard about him, but did not realize he was instrumental in laying the foundations for modern logic and modern philosophy. His focus on problems of arithmetic and then eventually problems of language are really quite amazing. This books allows you to see how his thought processes proceeded, how he failed, and how he succeeded. I generally agree with the favorable reviews here and do think that the book lives up to its claim of being "lucid".

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, June 17, 2000
This review is from: Frege (Past Masters) (Paperback)
This is an excellent introduction to the thought of Frege, an understanding of whom is essential to the study of modern philosophy...I think it is quite well-written; however, some of the discussion is rather technical for a book in the Past Masters series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brief but good, April 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Frege (Past Masters) (Paperback)
A brief intro to Frege that's a must for any college philosophy student. Clearly explains Frege's development and series of publications that charted his thoughts on concept-script (his logic notation), arithmetic, and numbers.

Truly a world class philosopher and a great way to get to know his ideas.

This is an interesting introduction to Gottlob Frege's philosophical journey. From his pondering on numbers to his insights into what makes language meaningful to his revolutionizing logic, Frege deserves recognition for achievements that have had a marked influence on philosophy.

This book is an introduction, but is not necessarily easy. However, neither is it a daunting task to read. It is a crisp, clear, and interesting adventure right in tune with the other Past Master books. (An expanded work by Weiner, Frege Explained, was issued in 2004 and is preferred).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and easy intro to Frege, May 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Frege (Past Masters) (Paperback)
The "Past Master" series is excellent. I had no idea that G. Frege was so important in the development of modern logic. I have had minimal exposure to logic and philosophy, but with a little effort the ideas presented in this book can be understood even without that background. It is not necessarily easy, but the effort is worth it.

This is probably a good book if you are encountering Frege in a college course and want to see the context his thoughts came out of and what his intentions were.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Clear... as advertised, April 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Frege (Past Masters) (Paperback)
This exceptional little book gives a clear introduction to Frege's philosophical development. It's clear, but not a dumbed-down account of what he accomplished and how he did it. Because of Frege's importance, an overview of what he did and how he did it is helpful for anyone interested in modern philosophy. This is a good book to get you going: to give you an excellent overview before proceeding to other detailed accounts.

I've read both the Kenny and Weiner introductions to Frege and find them both excellent. I do think that Weiner's is a better starter because it is short, sweet, and precise.
