excellent Hoban,
By Hoichi, the Earless (Sietch Tabr, Arrakis) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fremder (Paperback)
Besides Riddley Walker, I think Fremder stands easily toe-to-toe with the best that Hoban has ever written. Great, thought-provoking sci-fi that follows the truest tenants of the genre, while simultaniously pushing them.
The reviewer before me made a comment about this edition being only in Spanish, which is incorrect. The edition pictured is indeed in English, though it does seem to be unavalible in the US as indicated by the last reviewer. I myself aquired my copy from Amazon.co.uk At anyrate, a absolute find and very essential work that easily deserves ones attention if you follow Hoban or just love intelligent sci-fi in general.

English Language Edition,
This review is from: Fremder (Hardcover)
This is an English language edition. This "original novelist" is imaginative with striking honesty and contemplative prose. A must for all of the bibliophiles of the world.

i was so happy to find this book in print! absolutely a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection of both literature and sci fi. short enough and dense enough to reread over and over again.

'abysmal'?...,
This review is from: Fremder (Paperback)
not a word i use a whole lot, but one i feel is appropriate to the over-all tone of this tremendously masturbatory, self-important hunk of 'literate' junk...just finished re-reading 'ridley walker', & had such a great time that i thought i'd try something else by the author. i was hardly prepared to go from a well thought out, beautifully realized story, featuring one of the most charming lead characters of recent times, to one set in an incredibly cliched, spaceship-filled sf 'future', & revolving around the musings & 'adventures' of one of the most unlikable, unsympathetic, & astonishingly over-pretentious characters i've ever had the displeasure to encounter. this is a book devoid of any merit whatsoever, aside from possibly serving as 'exhibit a' in a discussion regarding the subject 'literature as a club, & how writing one very good book can make you a lifetime member, & worthy of continuing praise, no matter how truly awful anything else you write is'... the good news: i read 'ridley walker' first. because, if i'd read 'fremder' first, i never would've read 'ridley walker'... my best to russell hoban. thanks for ridley. & hope you're enjoying your stay in the club :) ... |
