5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Easy
The quilts in this book are beautiful and impressive. Easy to make, too. Choosing fabrics that will carry out the subtle shadings is probably the most difficult part of the whole project.

I did give a little more attention to matching points than the author seemed to suggest, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist about that.

I think the book would be...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great quilts but poor layout of instructions
The book has terrific quilts and the directions are good too but the directions for the quilt are scattered around in the book. For the directions for any one particular quilt, you are referred to multple different pages for your insturctions. Very irrating. I do plan to make a quilt from this book but I sure don't like the format.

I think the book would be great for someone with moderate quilting skills, or for a beginner who has someone to go to with questions (and maybe to take along when fabric shopping).

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, but ..., May 12, 2007

I have made one quilt (Big Red)from this book and will probably make more. The quilts are beautiful and the photos are excellent, which was fortunate because I found the instructions very difficult to follow. You are constantly being referred to other pages and it's difficult to determine where the instructions for "your" quilt end and the next one begins. I also think they made a mountain out of a molehill because many of the instructions seemed unnecessary. I ignored many of them and did what made sense to me, with the help of the excellent photography. Having said that I would like to add that the quilt went together beautifully. It truly is not difficult once you figure out what is going on. I gave it 4 stars because, to me, it was worth the aggravation and I am extremely happy with the quilt.

This is a highly readable, beautifully printed book about how to make a knockout "French Braid" quilt. The quilt can be long or short, wide or narrow. The quilt takes its character from the strong diagonals and from the imaginative choice of fabrics. It's a Wow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book and process, August 12, 2006
This review is from: French Braid Quilts: 14 Quick Quilts with Dramatic Results (Paperback)
This is a really awesome book that offers so many options for customizing a very simple cutting and assembly technique. Whether you are a traditional quilter or want something more unusual, this technique has endless possiblities- I am on my third full size quilt.Using the simple chart at the back, you can purchase and assemble your materials to make your project any size you wish, from wall hanging to bed size. This will satisfy the qulter who wants a fast result with great style and almost endless variety.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile and beautiful!, November 9, 2006
This review is from: French Braid Quilts: 14 Quick Quilts with Dramatic Results (Paperback)
The designs in this book can be rearranged many ways to produce dramatically different quilts. The pattern is easy, and the instructions are straightforward. Watch the yardages--you may not need as much as the book suggests.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beginner Project Book, June 24, 2006
This review is from: French Braid Quilts: 14 Quick Quilts with Dramatic Results (Paperback)
The photos of pieces done using the French Braid technique are lovely! The pieces look more complicated and challenging than what they actually are. This is a great beginner project book, if you are considering buying it. But for an established quilter, I'd suggest going to the library and checking out a copy, if available, reading the first 20 pages, looking at the images and then designing your piece. You really don't need the book on your bookshelf. It isn't one you're likely to refer to over and over again unless you want the measurements for the pieces of the quilts photographed in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging design made easy, January 9, 2007
This review is from: French Braid Quilts: 14 Quick Quilts with Dramatic Results (Paperback)
This publication breaks the braid design, which looks quite difficult and challenging, into an easy-to-follow step-by-step process. Since a properly graduated color palette is a key component in the project success, the explanation of color value and the selection of sample fabric lines is a good visual guide. Looking at completed quilts in a variety of color options is fun and inspirational.

When I first saw this book, I hated it. Then one of my friends showed me something she had created from it, and I was hooked. She told me how easy it was to put together, and I bought it. Then I saw the "stained glass" look on the back cover. Oh, my. Gotta have it. Thanks for all the wonderful directions, sketches and overall layout of the book. Great job. Promises to have some really nice looking but different quilts out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quilt as you go!, January 31, 2007

What a fun quilt to make! The directions are clear and well-written. I used Sharon Pederson's method (reversible quilts; quilt as you go), and ended up with quilted panels that simply needed to be sewn together to end up with a completely quilted quilt!
