5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL RESOURCE!
I have read and reread this book numerous times. I have owned Frenchies for nearly ten years and this is hands down the single best overall basics on the breed. The author presents important information in an engaging, straight forward manner and is a world renowned expert in Frenchies. If you are considering a frenchie or have recently added one to your family, this...

This is definitely a must-have for anyone interested in French Bulldogs. It is invaluable for anyone new to the breed, explaining all of the concerns associated with owning a "frenchie". (It is especially good for the first-time dog owner, going over all of the basics of raising and caring for a puppy). It's also loaded with great photos, so if you're a frenchie-lover, buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow., May 22, 2005
This review is from: The French Bulldog: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
This is a great book for any Frenchie owner. Unlike some books which claim to be breed specific but aren't this book contains lots of information on French Bulldogs. It covers housebreaking, Feeding, Grooming, Health and so much more. There are lots of great photos as well. I got this book shortly before getting my Frenchie, and it was so helpful. It's written in a way that someone new to the breed like me, or someone that is intreseted in a pet rather then a showdog can understand. This is a book written by a true Frenchie lover, for Frenchie lovers and newbies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Anyone Considering A French Bulldog, March 29, 2005
By
This review is from: The French Bulldog: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
I bought this book when we were leaning towards getting a French Bulldog and wanted more in-depth information. The author is a well-respected breeder of Frenchies with many years of experience. She knows what she is talking about first-hand. This is a great book for anyone considering adding a Frenchie to their family. It is full of all the information you need without excessive information that would overwhelm someone trying to decide if this is the right breed for them. Read this book and you will be well prepared for your flat-faced family member on arrival!

This review is from: The French Bulldog: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
This is truly a must for anyone interested in French Bulldogs, especially newcomers to the breed! In the author's presentation, she made it evident about how much fun Frenchies are, but spelled out all of the concerns an owner should have. Great subject matter and coverage, but concise and simply stated! The last part needed to be directed more toward the French Bulldog, not just a generic application. This section did not take anything away from the book as a whole. I will use my copy to read and to share with others that are new to the world of French Bulldogs! This book is well worth the reasonable cost!

This review is from: The French Bulldog: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
As a prospective new owner of a French Bulldog, I was looking for information that would help me learn about this wonderful breed. I bought every book about Frenchies that I could find, and then Kathy's book was published. I got it two weeks before we picked up our puppy. As far as I am concerned, it is the only Frenchie book you will ever need. Every question I had was answered. Even the breed standard is explained. The chapters are well laid out, and every page is chock full of helpful information. The pictures are wonderful, and the training section is a big help. A first rate book, especially for newbies to the Frenchie world.

After aquiring my first Frenchie puppy a few months ago, I read this book cover to cover. Now I use it almost daily as a resource--I even quote this book at my vet's office. I would definitely recommend this book to any future Frenchie owner as it has really been a lifesaver for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frenchies for Dummies!, August 9, 2000
By
This review is from: The French Bulldog: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
Kathy Dannel has a winner in An Owner's Guide to Frenchies! I wish this title had been available before getting our Frenchie. It explains the basics and what to expect once you've been aquired by this Breed. The pictures alone are worth getting this book for, gorgeous Frenchies romping through the snow, and enjoying some yummy puppy food.

In short, this book captures the essence of these dogs, and what to expect from them and what they will expect from you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacks real substance and offers bad behavior advice, January 1, 2009

Save your money, don't buy this book. You can find all of this information on the internet for free. Do not take her advice for training or behavior, use an actual training guide or consult an obedience trainer.

The author does an excellent job of detailing the history of the breed and providing information on what the Frenchie should look like. She also provides a list of questions you should ask a potential breeder and makes recommendations on how to bring a new puppy into your home.

This stuff is great, but there is little useful detail beyond that. The author mentions that you should talk to a vet regarding Brachiocephalic breeds (but doesn't actually use that term). I got way more information about Frenchie health problems on via the web FOR FREE.

The author makes some suggestions that lead to poor behavior patterns. For house training, she recommends you watch the puppy constantly and does not discuss the option of crate training. She also provides inaccurate and fear-mongering information regarding feeding your dog a raw diet. I believe this is due to the book being about 10 years old, but there is sufficient data to suggest a raw diet is viable, not harmful, and there are many commercial, pre-packaged raw options on the market that address the concerns she outlines. Furthermore, this data suggests feeding your dog rice and pasta (as she states that she does) is irritating to their digestive systems because dogs are not meant to digest wheat and corn. Many Frenchies suffer from food allergies and this issue is not addressed in this book.

The author also suggests that if you can't feed your dog at lunch time because you are not home, you should leave dry kibble out for them to eat at their leisure suggesting that this will cause less problems of aggression between the dogs during other feeding times. Again this is poor behavioral advice and will lead to problematic behaviors like hoarding and could actually increase aggression.

Overall this is a cute "feel good" book but it is lacking in any really useful advice. For puppy training, refer to a local obedience resource or other (recent) books. For Frenchie diet and health recommendations, frenchbulldogz.org is a much better source of information (for free!). Don't waste your money on this book.
