5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn the basics November 13, 2011
This book is great for learning the basic method of thought to understanding the French, and indeed many other Latin based languages, it really teaches you to think in a way that makes learning the language much easier.

I can somewhat understand the negative reviews of this book, since my first impression of it when I picked it up in a bookstore were not too favorable. Then I happened to check the book out of the library, and the more I read it, the more I liked it, and I decided that I wanted a copy of my own, since I tend to write all over books that I actually use. I have been trying to learn enough French to read at least to some degree books (in French) I acquired for a particular hobby interest of mine. In this particular area, the most comprehensive and useful books are in French. Use of online translators and misguided use of a French-English dictionary helped some, but there was a great deal I was still confused about. Try looking up "Il y a" and see what you can find! French for Dummies cleared this up. "Il faut" appeared quite often in what I was reading. I kind of figured out what it meant, but French for Dummies made the real meaning very clear. I have found many presentations in this book extremely useful, and the arrangement that many complain about, for me, provides useful contextual clues that a more "normal" presentation is missing.

If you think you can achieve a particular goal (reading French in my case, speaking for others) by just using this book, you are fooling yourself, but I don't think it is the book's fault. I also got French Essentials For Dummies (For Dummies (Language & Literature)) from Amazon, and these together with Intermediate French For Dummies (acquired elswhere) have collectively been very helpful to me, each with a different style and level of presentation.

1.0 out of 5 stars French for Dummies, with CD November 13, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I wanted a dvd that went along with every page so I KNEW I was pronouncing the French words correctly instead this CD not only jumps entire chapters, but whole sections. I written out version of how a word is supposed to sound does not do the French voice justice. I was doing it incorrectly. You need to learn the correct way from the start and build upon it.
I would suggest the AUDIO SET first or in conjunction with this book, but not this book/CD alone.

I have a background in Spanish and was considering getting touch with my French side and perhaps visiting my family up in Canada. However, I received this book earlier today and must say by NO MEANS is this a proper dummies book.

This piece of literature jumps around without organization apart from the chapter names. I understand some of the words as they are cognates in Spanish and English. The book describes cognates as "friends" and false cognates as "false friends". The book doesn't do a good job of explaining grammar but looks like it's intentionally for surviving while traveling, yet it doesn't do a good job at that either.

This book should renamed "Traveling French for Dummies (if you have a background in a romance language)".

Find yourself a Pimsleur or a McGraw-Hill and save yourself time and money.
(I Luckily only payed 7 bucks for this)

5.0 out of 5 stars no longer a dummy! October 3, 2012

I learned French many years ago and wanted to start learning again but i didn't want to go to a beginners class. I was looking for a book that would refresh my memory and hopefully also teach me something new. French for Dummies did all it promised and all I hoped it would do. I would recommend it if you are either a beginner or like me want a refresher course.
