A true master of the flute, and wonderful interpreter of music,
By Ron M. "Ron M." (Rutherford, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: French & German Flute Masterpieces (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful recording by a remarkable flutist. Paige spent more than 30 years with the New York Philharmonic, after a stint as principal flutist with the Buffalo Philharmonic at the tender age of 19. He studied with Joseph Mariano, the wonderful flute teacher at the Eastman School of Music. He even led an Army band at the invasion of Normandy. I have to admit to a little bias -- I knew Paige well and studied the flute with him when I was in high school. He was a brilliant interpreter of music, played a mean piano (he would accompany his students on such sonatas as the Poulenc and Hindemith) and a loving, wonderful person. So this is tremendously gratifying that he was captured in a more intimate setting as a recitalist. I truly believe you will not find a finer, more gifted interpreter of flute music than Paige Brook. His subtlety of phrasing, the consummate delicacy with which he separates notes -- you would be hard pressed to find another flutist, past or present, who plays with such intelligence. If you're a flutist or love the flute and flute music, you MUST have this CD. The sound is terrific and the playing is masterful. Paige also plays flute obligato on a Beverly Sills recording that you will find elsewhere on this website. Just gorgeous. Let me tell you, this guy could play. Not just all of the notes and then some -- he could PLAY.
