Hi, all. I really liked this book. The only thing I always wondered was why Sarah Woodruff seduces Charles Smithson? Any takers?

Can't believe no one else answered this question.

I think we have to take Sarah's word on this one -- that she did it to prove to herself that in another place and time, she could get a man like Charles Smithson to love her. Ultimately, she knew that she could never make him, or any man, truly happy. She was destined to be alone, and happiest that way.
