This is the revised Segond edition, which uses everyday French words (differing from the 1910 Edition which somtimes uses an old-fashioned vocabulary). In my opinion, the Segond revised language is the most understandable French translation of the Bible. And this book is a great scripural support for prayer and devotional!

This book has a compact size which makes it ideal to take along to church, to a day trip or to a quiet prayer place. The downside of its size is that the font is relatively small. Therefore a book of this size is more recommended to younger generations who have a sharp and distinct view. Can also be an ideal gift for a baptism.

Contrairement à la critique précédente, la Bible en français courant n'est pas une révision de la Louis Segond. Au contraire, c'est une version nouvelle. Elle en est à sa deuxième révision, et est disponible en version Catholique Romaine et Protestante. Son langage simple, directe, et son style vivant la rend très populaire non seulement parmi les nouveaux lecteurs de la Bible, mais aussi pour les lecteurs bibliques plus aguérit qui retrouve en elle un style passionant qui traduit mieux le texte que les traductions précédentes qui avaient souvent trop tendance à faire simplement du mots-à-mots. La Bible en français courant est "simplement dit" la meilleure version pour comprendre ce que les auteurs bibliques voulaient dire dans leurs textes. Elle ne prétend pas être une version mots-à-mots comme les versions Darby ou Segond, ni une paraphrase comme la Parole vivante ou Du Semeur... elle se situe entre les deux groupes; elle est plus lisible que les premières tout en étant plus précise que les deuxièmes. Je lui donnerais 6 étoiles si je pouvais....

This is a wonderful edition for the non-native French speaker. It reads very easily, much like the NIV English version, with modern grammer and word choice. However, its treatment of God's gender is a little disconcerting for the English speaker. For example, John 1:1 uses the less common French word "la parole" instead of the common "le mot." Consequently, God is referred to throughout the passage with the feminine article. This aside, it is a wonderful edition with helpful maps, tables, glossaries and cross-references. As a side note, the book is not hardcover, as advertised, but vinyl.

Though not familiar with this revised edition, I use the Louis Segond translation when I read the Bible in French. It is an edition that is both faithful to the original texts, and readable. Now, I am aware that there has been some concern over the use of the feminine word 'parole' to refer to 'the Word' in the beginning of the Gospel according to John(L'Évangile selon Jean); allow me to make a quick explanation (coming from a French-speaker whose native tongue is English).

There are two words that can be translated 'word' in French. One of these is 'mot,' which is masculine in gender, but means literally, one spoken or written word. The other is the feminine 'parole,' which is closer to the Greek 'logos.' This means that some verses would seem to be referring to Christ (the Word) as a 'she.' However, this is only a problem in English. In French, it is common for a man to refer to himself in the feminine, or in the plural, just as it is common for a woman to refer to herself in the masculine, or in the plural. French nouns, unlike English, all have gender (there are no 'neuter' nouns). When one refers to oneself, the gender of the personal pronoun is in accordance with the gender of the noun to which it refers, not to the speaker. For example, I could say 'Ma femme,' meaning 'my wife.' The personal pronoun 'ma' is feminine, yet it indicates that the word 'femme' is feminine, not that I am a woman. Likewise, when the Word is referred to as 'la Parole,' it is not an indication of Christ's gender, but the gender of the word 'parole.'

Just wanted to mention that this Bible is the type that zips up. I like this. Others may not. Since it wasn't mentioned in the description, I wanted to make note of it.

The review of 4 March 2003, by user sql3642, is the most accurate description of this product. Contrary to some of the other reviews this is NOT a revision of the LSG (Louis Segond) translation. This is a new translation altogether and is written in simpler and more direct French.

Useful features include a well written introduction explaining which original texts were used for the translation and a vocabulary section in the back for words that are not necessarily French or are not commonly used adopted words.

This translation is fantastic for an English speaking student of French. My only complaint is the lack of direct and accurate information about French translations in general. Even on the web site of the American Bible Society there isn't a truly authoritative guide to which publications of French bibles are which translation. Be careful; you may end up purchasing a translation you did not intend to.

Also, Amazon links from this bible to hardcover editions of different translations. Be wary.

This is a well made volume. The pages are flexible but not flimsy. The typeface is simple and easy to read, if a bit small. The dimensions are very comfortable; it's light, easy to hold in one hand. The cover, which is advertised as "turtleback," is a kind of vinyl; it's very flexible, not at all cheap looking, and has a smooth feel in hand. There is a ribbon sewed into the binding to use as a place-holder. The best feature of this Bible, though, is the binding; it's both sturdy and flexible. It's an all-around great volume

The translation is an updated version of one considered to be a standard French translation. Nothing to complain about, nothing to rave about. There's a nice concordance, a small glossary, and a map in the back.

For my purposes (a Christian who is learning French), I am completely satisfied with this purchase.

The only French exposure I have is three years in high school, albeit from a great teacher. Even so, I can easily read 90% of the text, and using context clues and my previous knowledge can use this Bible just like any other I own. Plus it's a bible, so it's great anyways.

The text is very small and the pages are so thin that it often shows through on the other side making it difficult to read. But, because the price is so low it is still an okay deal.

My 92 year old mother lost her Bible that she had for over 40 years. She ask me repeatedly for her it. I had no clue where to get the Louis Segond version in Miami until a friend suggested Amazon. My mother's face lit up when I gave it to her.
