5.0 out of 5 stars It all dies anyway, May 6, 2004

This review is from: Frenching the Bully (Audio CD)
If one good thing ever came out of my adolescent years, it was my love for music, especially punk rock. Back in high school, I was surrounded by too many conformists. You were either a jock/cheerleader or a metalhead. I was neither. During my freshman year in high school, I discovered Social Distortion and the rest was history. I threw myself into the whole punk culture. I lived and breathed punk. I read legendary fanzines such as Flipside and Maximum Rock 'N Roll. I bought music that I read about in the pages of Flipside and Maximum Rock 'N Roll. One of those bands I bought was The Gits. I bought "Frenching the Bully" one day (along with 7 Year B***h's "Sick 'Em All"). I was totally blown away by what I heard. Mia Zappata had an amazing set of vocal chords. In a genre of music where musical abilities isn't necessarily a prerequisite, Mia could actually sing. "It All Dies Anyway" (my favorite song by The Gits) was fast, loud yet melodic. The Gits certainly had that grungey sound to their music but they were by far not grunge. Their music was as fast as speed metal and as raw as The Ramones's music was. They lived and breathed the whole DIY life. They had that fierce independent spirit that the punk scene had (before it became watered down pop music no thanks to POS bands like Good Charlotte nad Blink 182). Tragically the band's career was cut short when Mia's life was taken from this planet (happy ending: her murderer was found in a Florida prison who is serving time for another crime). Although their time together was brief, The Gits gave me hope and left a legacy with their classic "Frenching the Bully". R.I.P Mia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, March 4, 2010
This review is from: Frenching the Bully (Audio CD)
I had never heard of the Gits until a couple of weeks ago when I watched their documentary. I fell in love with the band and I bought this CD on Itunes. I was blown away by the entire album. It has a mix of studio and live recordings. Their music definitely won't be for everybody, but give it a shot. It might the gem you've been looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars masterpiece, January 8, 2012
This review is from: Frenching the Bully (Audio CD)
Every song on this album rocks. It was one of those albums I listened to in my car for a year atleast without gettting sick of it, and I still listen every now and then some years ago and love it.
I understand the tragedy will always shadow the band and music, but it shouldn't. I honestly would say its a masterpiece if the tragedy never took place. Mia and her band were talented musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars So worth your cash., December 23, 2010
Great album. Every song is amazing. I finally really get the phrase "punk rock changed my life". Why this band is not mentioned with the great rock bands (punk or not) of all time is beyond me.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe how great this album still sounds., November 13, 2010
This review is from: Frenching the Bully (Audio CD)
Back in the day I discovered The Gits from 7 Year Bitch. I seriously don't think you would come to this album on Amazon if you don't already know them. Well maybe if you stumbled onto the documentary "The Gits" on Netflix. In that case, buy this album. Period. I don't know what else to say. They're a grunge the way the Supersuckers are, that is to say there not. Both bands moved to Seattle a year before grunge exploded. I can't believe how great and undated this album sounds. It's amazing...if you really don't know this band, just listen to the song "Another shot of whiskey". Trust me, you'll be punching the "Add To Cart" button before the song is over. Rest in peace Mia...loved you then, still love you now.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice trip down memory lane, May 6, 2010
This review is from: Frenching the Bully (Audio CD)
A couple of months ago I rented the documentary The Gits. The film quickly re-awoke a love I had for the band when I was in high school and college. Since I had sold my copy of Frenching the Chicken years ago, I found a copy of the re-release version that was re-titled Frenching the Bully. I admit that I thought the live tracks were pretty useless to me but the first half of the album makes it all the well worth the money spent on it. Mia Zapata had and always will have an amazing vocals especially in the punk genre (IMO The Gits' music was NOT grunge). After well over a decade, I was surprised by how well The Gits' music has held up despite the amount of time that I had spent not listening to them. I never heard a woman like Mia sing like the way she did in the alternative/punk rock scene. She had a big, powerful voice which really convey the emotions she invested into her lyrics. After all these years, "It All Dies Anyways" remains my favorite Gits song. It is so darn catchy. I also love "Another Shot of Whiskey" and "Second Skin". The death of Mia was a tragedy to say the very least. The Gits never got to show how truly special they were really were and what they had to offer. I definitely recommend "Frenching the Bully" for those who saw The Gits documentary and loved it as well as any music fan looking for something new and different.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album more people need to hear., September 5, 2008
This review is from: Frenching The Bully (MP3 Download)
An incredible album. I first found it as a college radio DJ in the early 90's and fell in love with it. Just listen to "Second Skin"... the growl, the emotion from lead singer Mia Zapata is intense.

She was a true talent, taken far too early. This band had the right sound, at the right time to explode... they should have gotten much more acknowledgment than they did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Embracing the Bully, June 2, 2008
This review is from: Frenching the Bully (Audio CD)
What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said. It's an underrated gem that didn't register on my radar until I saw the theatrical trailer for the upcoming movie.
This album screams 1990s Seattle, but don't lump the Gits into Grunge. They are Punk. They are Garage. They had "it". That "it" that seperates good from great. RIP Mia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul punk, October 22, 2006
This review is from: Frenching the Bully (Audio CD)
Incredible album that mixes the raw energy and sometimes fury of punk and the warmth of soul. Mia Zapata voice simply fills the room and your soul. One of my all time favorites and definitely one of punk's finest (even if also, unfortunately, one of punk's less known )...
