Beyond The Universe We Know,
By
This review is from: Frequencies From Planet Ten (Audio CD)
From the Boston-esque boogie of "The Astral Project" to the mellow but haunting guitar outro of "Star Shaped Cloud", this CD rocks hard. It will be evident to any listener with even a passing familiarity with hard rock that Orange Goblin owe a heavy debt to Black Sabbath: the chunky riffings build a crushing wall of sound that is broken here and there by softer guitar interludes; every where there are admonitions against mankind's brutal treatment of Mother Earth (and himself); there are even the trademark Ozzy "come ons" and "alright nows". But Orange Goblin are their own animal...they admirably attempt to develop their own sound by synthesizing their British influences (inc. Cream, Pink Floyd, and many others) and the results are incredible. To be sure, there are plenty of stoner anthems here ("Magic Carpet", "Song of the Purple Mushroom Fish", etc.), but OG are not just another weed band; their pagan spirituality and love of Tolkien (listen to "Lothlorien" and "Saruman's Dream") give most of the songs a deeper meaning and sincerity. This CD is so good that it's difficult to choose a favorite track! Thank the Gods that SOMEBODY out there still knows how to make REAL ROCK records.

Orange Goblin -"Frequencies From Planet Ten".,
By Simon R. Sansom (Chatham, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frequencies From Planet Ten (Audio CD)
I had heard and read intriguing things about this U.K. group, but had not had the pleasure of actually listening to them until quite recently, and I was NOT disappointed. Check out these tracks - 'Saruman's Wish", "Land of Secret Dreams", "Orange Goblin",,,aww heck, the whole thing's actually quite good. I've heard it classified as "stoner rock", but I think that might a term more commonly in use in the U.K.. If you like HEAVY-duty, fuzzy, Sabbath-inspired, retro-style space-metal with wild and spacey lyrics, you will LOVE these guys. The band is obviously very talented. I'd love to hear them played on North American radio more commonly. Makes METALLICA sound like whiney babies.Cheers!Simon

This review is from: Frequencies From Planet Ten (Audio CD)
orange goblin came out with this great debut in 1999.orange goblin rocks!!they have been called space metal and stoner rock which is a good description.this debut is really good.when i first heard it i loved it!orange goblin reminds me of a very psychedelic version of metallica with some definite black sabbath influence.this album is one of their best releases.i just ordered the second album by goblin called time traveling blues that should be good judging by this debut album.for me the great cuts on this album are;land of secret dreams[check out the wierd trippy vocals],the aquatic fanatic, saruman,s wish, the song of the purple mushroom fish[nice hallucinogenic title]star shaped cloud, magic carpet and orange goblin and finally lothorian.if you like bands like sabbath and metallica and a sort of mixture of those two bands styles then orange goblin is defineatly well worth checking out.

Heavy Sabbath Inspired Riffage....,

Praise the Lord & play it loud! .....there are still bands out there that can flat out rock with no hopes of ever getting on MTV or VH-1 "behind the corporate music". Very Black Sabbath "Volume IV" inspired with a dose of psych-rock for good measure. The best Goblin album for your first purchase. But to save on shipping & really start a stoner collection, go for the triple play today...Fu Manchu, Queens Of The Stone Age & Orange Goblin!

Someone else commented that this album was similar to Black Sabbath's Volume 4 and I would absolutely agree with that comparison. If you enjoy Sabbath classics such as Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener, Tomorrow's Dream, Cornucopia and Under the Sun/Every Day Comes and Goes, you'll love Orange Goblin's "Frequencies From Planet Ten". As mentioned by others, the album is dominated by heavy/fuzzy grooves that will cause your head to bob up and down uncontrollably. They also add keyboards and wah-pedals in some places that create a psychadelic/outer-space feeling to enhance the mood of the track. Vocally, I would say it sounds like Rob Zombie singing Ozzy's songs at a faster tempo......but that's all in the eye of the beholder.
This album further proves you can create a metal album without loading up solely on 16th-notes and over-the-top solos.

A Killer Debut!,

Orange Goblin's first album, and one of their best, Frequencies From Planet Ten avoids becoming repetitive, which is something the their later albums sometimes fail to do. On this offering, Orange Goblin vary from slow to fast, soft to heavy-as-Hell, atmospheric to riff driven...they offer a number of different sonic textures to please the listener and to keep your interest, and it works to great effect.

I rate by how much I am happy with my purchase. This one's maybe a 4.25. I like it alot. I'm going to try some more Goblin now. Psychedelic hard rock, like really good, heavy early 70's rock. Singer doesn't scream, doesn't sound like a girl. Great blend of music. Try it, for sure.

Orange Goblin, just rocks,
This review is from: Frequencies From Planet Ten (Audio CD)
I have loved Orange Goblin for some time now. I just recently bought this album and it has become one of my all time favorites of thiers.
Heavy duty grinding rock, these guys are in the same league as Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Lowrider, QOTSA, Nebula and so on but with thier own take. They are much heavier than the majority of Stoner Rock bands out there but the groove they dish out is hard to top. If you don't own Frequencies From Planet Ten what are you waiting for. Buy it, listen to it, love it. Nothing else need to be said. |
