Book Description

An invaluable tool for learners of Portuguese, this Frequency Dictionary provides a list of the 5000 most commonly used words in the language. Based on a twenty-million-word collection of Portuguese (taken from both Portuguese and Brazilian sources), which includes both written and spoken material, this dictionary provides detailed information for each of the 5000 entries, including the English equivalent, a sample sentence, and an indication of register and dialect variation.

Users can access the top 5000 words either through the main frequency listing or through an alphabetical index. Throughout the frequency listing there are also thrity thematically-organized ‘boxed’ lists of the top words from a variety of key topics such as sports, weather, clothing and relations.

An engaging and highly useful resource, A Frequency Dictionary of Portuguese will enable students of all levels to get the most out of their study of Portuguese vocabulary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but the Kindle edition is a disaster July 8, 2013
By Javid
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am writing this review having completed 18% of the book, and I'll definitely update the review (but it looks like nothing will make me change my opinion :)).
The idea of the book is just awesome, and as a polyglot with an ever-expanding area of interest, I will look for other books in this edition (from what I remember, they have similar dictionaries for German, French, Dutch and other languages). The words taught are really demanded in day-to-day conversations (like many other people, I hate memorising words and phrases I will never use in my life), and examples of use often contain handy expressions (for example, "por nada de vida" -- "not on one's life"), which are difficult to find elsewhere, at least as far as literature (as opposed to conversation) is concerned. I also appreciated comments on whether a word is used in European or Brazilian Portuguese.
However, the quality of the Kindle edition leaves much to be desired. I've uploaded three customer images (they are the only ones so far) to illustrate my points.
Complaint #1. Diacritic signs are missing in many instances. In many cases, say, the word "geração" is written as "geracao" or "geraçao". This is not too much of a problem before you come across a phrase like "encontrei a sua mãe" and beat your brains out to understand whether it was "a sua mãe" or "à sua mãe" originally.
Complaint #2. Sometimes, parts of the same word get separated by spaces for some reason (e.g., "acom pan ha" instead of "acompanha"). These problems are annoying but still don't misguide the reader, unlike the ones described in --
Complaint #3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Way To Approach A Language November 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a long-time student of various languages and always struggle with mastering the vocabulary. This book is a nice supplement to other learning materials. It is very well researched, professionally presented and user friendly. It helps me really focus on learning well the most frequently used words, which are presented in context; i.e. you can actually memorize the word as it is shown in the sample sentence. I could not be happier with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Book June 20, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Admittedly, I haven't read the book word for word, but it seems to be a generally well put together publication. The print is clear and the pages are a decent grade of paper. One point that is worth pointing out is that the sources for the content are split evenly between Brazil and Portugal. So, half of the example sentences are from Brazilian Portuguese and half are from Portugal Portuguese. Furthermore, the Portugal spelling is used for entries regardless of the example sentence source. Personally, I view this as a bit of a con given that Brazilian Portuguese is more widely used than Portugal Portuguese, but some may view this as a plus. However, to the producer's credit, they're upfront about this aspect and provide a pretty detailed summary of their methods and the preparation process for the content.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs proofreading! August 19, 2014
By G. Dick
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very helpful book, but man it needs proofreading! So many errors where words aren't spelled the same in other entries as in their main entry. Just tonight found the entry for "Selecção" where in the example sentance the word is spelled "Seleção". After the 1990 spelling changes, 'seleção' is the correct form.
