This little filter works great for any standard coffee maker that you would like to stop having to buy disposable paper filters for, and it does improve the smoothness of most coffees by letting all of the coffee's natural oils pass into your cup. However you should always try to use a coarse grind of coffee with this filter or you will wind up with quite a bit of coffee dust in the dregs of your cup. I'm not sure if this will "pay for itself" over time, but I can imagine that within a few years you would get close to breaking even over buying disposable filters. Cleaning this thing is a snap; all you need is a steady stream of hot water with decent pressure and all residue comes right off and it will look brand new.
