Review

"Chris Hodges's book Fresh Air explains how to experience a freshness in your life and relationship with God that you may not have realized was possible. Instead of a list of Christian how-to's or quick fixes, it takes readers inward, leading them on a spiritual journey of transformation from the inside out. Chris's personal experiences and humorous anecdotes make this book an engaging read. I recommend it!" --John C. Maxwell, Leadership expert, author, and speaker

"Inspiring and practical, Fresh Air is a must-read for anyone who wants more out of life. Best of all, the insightful and power-filled principles in this book are ones that anyone can apply." --Mark Batterson, Lead pastor, National Community Church, Washington, DC; New York Times bestselling author

"Chris Hodges is being used by God in our generation to bring new insights and leadership to the church. Discover the powerful secrets of a God-breathed life and enjoy the fresh air of God's blessing." --Steven Furtick, Lead pastor, Elevation Church, Matthews, NC; author, Sun Stand Still

"If anyone can honestly tell you what it means to live a vibrant life with God, Chris can. He is one of America's best teachers of God's Word. There is a critical need for the message in this book because many Christians have grown cold and stale. No matter where you are in your walk with God, you can use some fresh air. Pick up this book and get ready to breathe again." --Rick Bezet, Lead pastor, New Life Church of Arkansas

"We all know what it is like to feel stuck, when it seems like we are going nowhere fast. In times like that, the breath of God makes all the difference. It renews us; it changes hearts and attitudes. Fresh Air reminds us that if we seek God, he will never fail to change us from the inside-out." --Greg Surratt, Lead pastor, Seacoast Church, Mt. Pleasant, SC; author, Ir-Rev-Rend

I come from a Baptist and Methodist background, so we don't necessarily like to discuss the Holy Spirit. He kinda becomes the amorphous blob in that background that lives in our hearts (apparently), but doesn't do much else. I read a lot of literature on the Holy Spirit, and I've definitely found books that can go off the deep end of Pentecostalism in the opposite direction.

This book fits neither category.

Chris builds this book off of a number of stories and metaphors that illustrate the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. He begins with an illustration of the old maritime doldrums where the wind does not blow, leaving ships wandering aimlessly. Obviously, the connection is to our lives. Chris describes the average life as one where we are just living, literally stuck just surviving. But there is something more out there...

The true strength of the book is that it is very much a common-man's (or woman's) explanation of how the Spirit works. The crux - and I'm not giving away any secrets here - is that the Holy Spirit is the breath of fresh air (think breath of God and blast of wind) in our lives. As a practical example, Chris explains the 7 Biblical words that are all rendered praise in English. The meanings are quite diverse and illustrate the relationship we are missing out on.

Now I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Tyndale, but I also received this book with very high expectations. I am familiar with Chris and listen to some of his podcasts. Chris is as strong a writer as he is a pastor, and he explains things in common language.

If you only read one book outside the Bible, I'd strongly consider this one!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fresh Air. It explained to me how to focus on something that is bigger than my problems. When God becomes bigger in my life, my problems then get smaller.

Okay, the book has not even hit the shelves yet and I bought 10 copies through preorder. Why? Because week in and week out Pastor Chris Hodges shares "Fresh Air" in sermons at Church of the Highlands and I have never seen or heard a bad message over the last 5 years, so I figured he wouldn't start doing that simply because he was putting what God laid on his heart on paper, rather than verbally. Will redo review after I've read the book during the week.

There is a huge difference between relationships that you get to enjoy rather than have to maintain as well as ones that seem to suck the life out of you rather than energize you. Pastor Chris articulates how each of us can have a personal "get to" relationship with Jesus that is energizing like a breath of fresh air. This book is a must read for anyone who feels obligated to do things for God or has never enjoyed their faith.

Fresh Air is a book that I recommend to anyone who really wants to understand, pursue, and live out a passionate, life-filled relationship with Jesus. The greatest truth that I ever learned is that God desires a relationship WITH me, not religion FROM me. It is a "get to" life instead of a "got to" life. This book unpacks this truth meticulously and with simplicity. It will change your life, and the world.

In Fresh Air, Chris Hodges challenges readers to live a vibrant Christian life by learning to live through the power of the Holy Spirit. In his first book, Hodges tells the story of his own bouts with a spiritual depression before finding the "Fresh Air" that is offered through a vibrant relationship with the Holy Spirit.

The first section of the book sets up the theology of relationship over religion. Hodges argued that Jesus repelled the religious yet welcomed the broken. The goal of Christianity is not following religious rules or checking off religious boxes, but it is having a relationship with Jesus Christ that changes everything. Hodges does an effective job of presenting the compelling nature of this life-changing truth.

The second section of Fresh Air seeks to apply maintaining a relationship with Jesus Christ through the application of personal spiritual disciplines. Hodges practically and clearly explains the disciplines of Bible study, prayer, worship, biblical community, giving, and Sabbath. In addition to what many would consider the traditional spiritual disciplines, he adds keeping an eternal perspective and having a good attitude. This section of the book gives readers practical steps to help adjust their lives to living by breathing fresh air by maintaining a relationship with Jesus.

The final section of the book explains the Person and role of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life. Hodges seeks to present the Holy Spirit not as some weird religious phenomenon but as a friend who helps you live the Christian life. This is a helpful theology that makes Christian living not about the Christian's performance, but the Holy Spirit's work in and through the Christian.

Fresh Air is a practical and theologically sound read.
