5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Air Poultry Houses
This guide was written when the family farm was the rule rather than the exception and therefore is full of useful information written in plain english for prospective or experienced aviculturists.
I was able to narrow down my choices for an appropriate coop design and avoid some pitfalls that used to be common knowledge.

3.0 out of 5 stars lots of Ideas
This book is chalked full of ideas, about building open front building. It contians several diagrams and "blue Prints". It presents a lot of good ideas. The only draw back is that the drawings don't have all the imformation for building. The imformation is in the book, just not all in one spot, some of it is on the picture, some of it in the text or on the caption...

This book is clear and precise in describing the requirements and techniques for safe and healthy poultry husbandry from backyard coops to much larger commercial operations.

Thanks to Norton Creek Press for re-printing another wise, but out-of-print book!

What an eye opener, especially when it comes to winter flock management in cold, snowy, harsh climates like ours!

This book will change our winter management style--and make it a lot simpler. Our chickens will be more comfortable and healthy, and we'll have a lot less work to do!

Highly recommended for those who keep chickens for pleasure, as well as profit.

The only draw back is that the drawings don't have all the imformation for building. The imformation is in the book, just not all in one spot, some of it is on the picture, some of it in the text or on the caption below the picture. That just means that you have to do a little digging around the book to find out what you want to know. Over all the book was worth the money to me.

Really liked this book and wish there were alot more like it. Sometimes it's hard to remember that it was written almost a century ago. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to raise chickens in a more natural, healthier way.

The reprint books from Norton Creek Press are all gems of early poultry keeping. They predate mega farms, and have great insights into how it was done. As topical now, as in the day.
A big thanks to Robert for making these available.

5.0 out of 5 stars the only poultry housing book you need, December 8, 2010

I wish I could back the umpteen hours I spent looking at standard poultry house design books and internet sites. This is the only one you'll need, folks. As another review stated, some of the specific info for building each coup is spread out within the chapter; but it is discussed in context. Also, I believe this makes personalized modifications easier (seeing the directions in context rather than as a one-size fits all blueprint format).

Very highly recommended.

I loved reading this book! I wish I'd known about it when I first started out with my chickens! It is informative, sensible, easy to understand, it contains lots of building diagrams/designs that have been proven and used. The author writes well, with a bit of humour at times, and with fantastic information that (I believe) people have forgotten about in our modern times, in regards to best coop design and placement for chickens (not for us!)I highly highly recommend this book, definitely the best design book I've come across!

I'm venturing into the world of chickens myself and this little book was recommended to me by a man quite obsessed with chickens and the art of raising them. Having read the book, I was so taken by Woods' seemingly unorthodox approach, and the poultry houses he espouses, that I'm convinced this is the direction that I'll be going with my own chickens.

What a delight to find a book originally published in 1911 (the version I purchased is a reprint of the updated 1924 version) that's just as relevant and forward-thinking today as it was 100 years ago!

Highly recommended.

This a must in building a chicken coop! Dr. Woods ideas are completely contrary to conventional wisdom, but make sooooo much more sense. We look forward to our first NE winter to see how the chickens fair. But we were confident enough in his experience to go for it!
A must read! Glad it was reprinted from 1924!
