More About the Author

When Annie Selke was a little girl, she coveted a deluxe box of crayons. She didn't get it, and was forced to create her own wide-ranging and sophisticated color palettes. In high school, she developed an odd-couple love affair with the Colefax and Fowler wallpaper in her dorm at Miss Porter's School, which sparked a vintage-fabric-collecting addiction. Throw in a some sewing lessons and art history courses, and a design career was born.

A graduate of the University of Vermont and the Fashion Institute of Technology, Annie worked in PR, copywriting, merchandising, and product development for the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue, Ferragamo, Conran's, and the Museum of American Folk Art. She is the founder of the widely acclaimed home textiles companies Pine Cone Hill and Dash & Albert Rug Company. Fresh American Spaces is Annie's first book, and in both the book and on her blog, freshamerican.com, she is delighted to help readers answer the timely question "What's your Fresh American style?"

This is a fun, colorful book with a new take on American design. It feels very 21st century because it veers away from the somewhat tired design categories with 5 new templates for home design: Everyday Exuberance - colorful and happy, Refined Romantic - a softer palette, Happy Preppy - lots of red, white and blue and a prepster feel, Nuanced Neutrals - things of the earth, and Cultured Eclectic - think well-traveled intellectual. The pages are big and glossy. There are huge pictures and examples on every page, with ideas for colors, paints, furniture and fabric. This is a fun idea book!

What a charming book cover. I bought this along with a book by Barclay Butera and I think "Fresh American Spaces" suffered in comparison. The 'Spaces' book presents several styles of 'fresh' decorating - all but one using very vivid colors and the photography is enjoyable BUT where Barclay's great photographs enable you to deconstruct and draw inspiration - "Spaces" isn't as effective in that way - images of handsome but disparate items don't provide that vital inspiration on how to put all this together. Some of the palettes are almost cartoon like in their frenetic color palette. This probably a matter of personal taste - I'm sure many readers would benefit from seeing the happy palettes. I'd advise you to find the book and check it first and if this exuberant color strategy fits you - then this might be a great book for you!

Pretty to look at: great photos, large handsome rooms. Not much for the owner of a small (tiny by McMansion standards) house and a limited budget. I do love the how-to instructions on how to hang a grouping of pictures without pain. For fans of Annie Selke or those who haven't yet overdosed on handsome decorating books.

This is a lovely book, full of inspiration! Not just another coffee table book to collect dust! Has great ideas on transforming yard sale or hand me down furniture to a fresh, new piece. Recommend!
