*** UPDATES: 14Jul2010, 12Apr2012 (an important one) - see below ***
This is the best pollen I have found in the USA, and it's typically the one i buy when there.
I have been eating bee pollen regularly for the past 20 years or so, in many countries around the world.
When visiting the USA the only pollen I buy is this one from Y.S. Organic Bee farms. Why? Because it is fresh and it is collected (by bees) from flowers that have not been sprayed with toxic chemicals, making it good for the bees and good for you.
The price of this product here on Amazon (currently under $14)** is the best I have seen. In the shops it usually retails for about $16 to $18.
(( **UPDATE: Jul 14 2010 - price is now at 17 dollars, plus about 5 dollars shipping, so it can vary a fair bit. Shop around if you want to pay less. I can usually get it in local organic co-ops and health stores for around $18 ))
If you can, I do highly recommend contacting a local organic honey producer and asking if they will sell you pollen. In my opinion it is always best/ideal to eat locally produced pollen for numerous reasons. BUT for many people this is not so easy to get, and Y.S. Organic Bee Farms pollen is therefore likely to be your best bet.
NEW TO POLLEN?
Pollen is one of the most ancient super foods. It contains pretty much every nutrient your body requires. It is powerful stuff. Really. Don't under estimate the gift you give your body by including good quality organic pollen in your diet. Over millions of year plants have had to compete by producing the most nutritionally complete pollen possible, because bees will go for the flowers with the best, and those plants are the ontes that will survive. So time and evolution (and our friends the Bees) have ensured that when you eat pollen you are eating an extraordinary blend of nutrients, life-force, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, amino-acids, and more.
I suggest starting out with 1/2 a teaspoon as day, and working up to 1 or more tablespoons a day.
A WORD OF CAUTION: It is my understanding that in very rare instances some people have an allergic reaction to eating pollen. If you have not had pollen before, try just a little at first and see what happens after an hour or so. Also, some people (myself included, on perhaps 4 occasions in 20 years) will experience cramping in the stomach after eating pollen on an empty stomach. If this happens, try eating less, and try having it with food. This has only happened a few times to me, but is very noticeable when it does, although I was perfectly okay.
Chew your pollen well when eating it straight. It will help with the digestion of it. Alternatively, let it soak in water for 1/2 an hour or so. It will then dissolve into a liquid state. Drink that, keeping it in the mouth for a while before swallowing.
THE TASTE OF POLLEN: Pollen is generally quite sweet, and most people find it surprisingly delicious or at least completely acceptable to eat straight. The one from YS Organic Bee Farms is always sweet when I've had it (which is often).
I also put it into a super intelligent raw food smoothie. Here's one of my recipes:
Use clean spring water if you can. To that add 1 ripe organic banana as a base. Then add the following:
- Start out with 1 tablespoon of
Spirulina Pacifica Powder. Increase as you get use to the taste.
- 1 tablespoon of
Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs,
- A handful of
Raw Organic Goji Berries (soak them in water overnight if you want them to blend more smoothly),
- 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of
Organic Raw Maca Powder- 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of Lucuma Powder
- 1 tablespoon of Bee Pollen granules
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of
organic Ginger Root Powder (that'll help with your digestion of the other goodies).
This rough recipe is for about a quart (1 litre) of drink so use 1 quart (1 L) of water.
Blend them up in a blender, and enjoy.
I have given workshops on what I call "Intelligent Nutritional" in various countries, and this is a basic version of a recipe I share with people. I've had many people after just 3 to 7 days tell me they feel like a new person (they look like it too!!) after drinking this each morning. Friends comment on how them seem to be "glowing" and ask what they are up to!! Try it out.
If you're looking to buy Bee Pollen online, this is the brand to get, and it's at a great price.
*** UPDATE 12 April 2012 ***
It has sadly come to my attention that the pollen from Y.S. Organic Bee Farms is not in fact "organic" when it comes to their pollen. Their honey (which is quite delicious) is USDA certified organic, but not their pollen. It was my mistake to think it was when seeing their brand name. I suspect many people make the same mistake. Personally I find it a bit misleading to put such a brand name on a product that is not organic. It has also come to my attention that their Fresh pollen is sourced from bees in the USA, but their other pollen (
Bee Pollen - Low Moisture Whole Granulars - 10 oz - Powder) is sourced from China. I have emailed the company to confirm these details and seeking more info on their organic status. I have reduced my 5 star rating to 4 stars for now.

P.S. I have posted links to the products above, specifically selecting brands that I have tried and recommend. Different merchants, however, sell these products on Amazon and elsewhere online. So search here and elsewhere for the best price. The ones I have posted links to do not necessarily represent the best price and shipping deals, etc.
P.P.S. I recently bought pollen from another manufacturer here on Amazon. It was a lot cheaper, so I wanted to try it. It is not organic. Unfortunately I didn't like the taste of it. I also didn't like that it was not organic. There is a lot of toxic sprays used in the USA, and lots of Genetically Modified crops, so best to stick with certified organic pollen. You can read my review of it here:
High Desert Bee Pollen 1 lbs*** UPDATE 12 APRIL 2012 *** As pointed out above, it turns out YS Organic Bee Farms is not "organic". Could be just as sprayed as any other pollen on the market.
The alternative I have now tried, and feel quite happy with is the Spanish and Brazilian pollen available on Amazon. I have tried the Spanish one and found it to be good. It is claimed to be collected from wild fields, etc., in Spain. Obviously I can't confirm that though. I will post more info when I have it on hand.
