4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
Decided to learn new a sport at age 36. Bought this DVD on-line, spent money on a full set of snowboard gear at local sports store, and went snowboarding. I also paid 3 hours of 1 to 1 instructor. 3.0 out of 5 stars Snowboard Beginner
This video was the best beginning video about snowboarding available. Lots of practice skill sets were provided that I was able to apply on the slopes each time I went. The speaker was a very slow talker with a few silly catch phrases, but the message delivered was valuable to my advancement in snowboard as a beginner. I have slowly applied each skill to both my left...

Decided to learn new a sport at age 36. Bought this DVD on-line, spent money on a full set of snowboard gear at local sports store, and went snowboarding. I also paid 3 hours of 1 to 1 instructor. While this DVD can't beat a live personal instructor, it allows your skill to progress when not physically snowboarding. The video will help you to get off the lift chair the correct way. It will also show you how to ride either goofy or regular. This DVD gave me an edge over other first time snowboarders. It also helped me to progress from novice to intermediate in snowboarding. Bottom line: Watch this DVD, then get a personal instructor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Snowboard Beginner, December 15, 2008

This video was the best beginning video about snowboarding available. Lots of practice skill sets were provided that I was able to apply on the slopes each time I went. The speaker was a very slow talker with a few silly catch phrases, but the message delivered was valuable to my advancement in snowboard as a beginner. I have slowly applied each skill to both my left leg leading and right leg leading. Learning and developing the muscle memory to make each move is essential for a beginner. Try not to get frustrated and give up, keep at it and put what you learn from the video and from actual practice together and each day at the slope will be a great one.

4.0 out of 5 stars COVERS THE BASICS!!, January 8, 2008
This review is from: Fresh start snowboarding (DVD)
Covers most everything you would want to know as a beginner Snowboarder.
The Progressions are well explained; and demonstrated for leftys and right foot riders. Some of the extras are very helpful; like how an edge catch might happen. It makes good sense to preview this before you try to get on a Board.

I bought this together with the Boarding Skool DVD. After seeing them both, I like this one a lot more.

The author gives clear but lengthly explanation of each technique before he demonstrates it with both right foot and left foot stance. Altho the explanation is a little too long for my liking, it does contain lots of very helpful tips for beginners like myself. The demonstration are also excellent examples and very good reference.

This is not at all a bad video, the first one I bought. However, for a learner, it does not really teach you how to control the board, it tells you what you should be doing and different carving techniques, but not how to do it. Go Snowboard: Read It, Watch It, Do It (GO SERIES) by Neil McNab - is so much of a better resource, especially with their technique of teaching the four points of control of the snowboard, and how the flexing the board controls it. This is not bad, but McNab's book / DVD is so much better in both information and video quality.

I'm a lifelong skier, but after seeing all those people on snowboards having so much fun, I finally decided to try it for myself. I bought this DVD hoping to accelerating my learning curve. On the plus side, Kurt the instructor is a lot of fun and he gives you a lot of exercises to practice. However, there's just not enough detail. For some people, learning to do toeside and heelside turns may be intuitive, but for me, I need much more detailed directions. All he pretty much says is to dig your toes or heels into the snow! On the slopes, my instructor went over a lot of things (weight shifting, hip positioning, etc) which Kurt never mentions in his video.

This is a good video for those starting out. It's a little cheesy at some points, but seeing the basics helped me put everything together when i started learning to link turns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful introduction to snowboarding, November 15, 2011

I acquired this video before my first time snowboarding last season and found it very helpful. The two things I liked about it most was its focus on detail for true beginners, and it's explanation of snowboarding concepts. I gave it 5 stars because it does what it needs to do to teach the rider to go from someone who has never snowboarded to somebody who knows how to snowboard.

The thing that makes the video great for true beginners is it makes sure you won't be overwhelmed when you first get on the mountain. It shows several simple maneuvers that people who have never snowboarded would be comfortable with trying right away, and then it covers how to ride the lift.

As the video progresses to maneuvers that you'll be doing after you take the lift up the mountain, Fresh Start takes time to stop and really show the viewer the concept of next maneuver it will cover. They do this by using graph paper to sketch the skid path the snowboarder will take, and then using a toy snowboarder to show what it looks like, and then show the instructor performing the maneuver on the mountain. Then it's on to the next maneuver.

I recommend watching this video several times before your first time snowboarding.

1.0 out of 5 stars Video is not done professionally, December 24, 2007
This review is from: Fresh start snowboarding (DVD)
The navigations of the DVD is poor, the picture quality is not up to the mark and some instructions are not clear. This is definately not what I expected.
