Freshwater Cultured Pearls

These pearls are gathered from freshwater lake and river mollusks. Most Freshwater pearls come from China and they can be mostly round to off-round, or rice-shaped to baroque. They look similar to Akoya pearls, but are the perfect gift when on a budget. They might be slightly less symmetrical, smaller, or not as easily matched, but these minor differences provide a major value for the price.

Cultivation

Pearls are produced naturally in the body of salt and freshwater mollusks, such as oysters and mussels. When these animals sense an irritant, such as a grain of sand, they produce a soft coating of calcium carbonate substance around it. The result is a pearl. Because perfectly round, naturally produced pearls are so rare, a process known as cultivation was developed by Kokichi Mikimoto in the early 1900s. A small bead of polished shell, the nucleus, is used as an irritant and delicately inserted into the mantle of a mollusk. It takes approximately 20-24 months of intensive husbandry to cultivate a saltwater pearl and somewhat less time to cultivate freshwater pearls. The harvest usually takes place during the months of June and September.

Color

Mollusks produce pearls in a variety of colors, accommodating most personal preferences and budgets. The general color of a pearl is also known as the body color. Pearls typically range from white, cream, and yellow to pink, silver, or black. An overtone of secondary color is sometimes seen. For instance, a pearl may appear to be white, but upon closer inspection a rosy hue is detected. The body color would then be termed white-rosé. Color variation does not affect the quality of the pearl, though it should be noted that color matching is important when choosing pearls for some necklaces, earrings, or bracelets. In fashion jewelry, pearls can sometimes be dyed to achieve the desired color, which should be mentioned in the product description or specifications.

Lustre

The appealing, deep shine of a pearl is often what defines its beauty. This shine is produced by multiple layers of semi-opaque calcium carbonate crystals, called nacre. The nacre reflects light on the surface of the pearl, producing brilliance and sheen. Lustre is an integral feature in determining the quality of a pearl. Large pearls have a thicker nacre and, therefore, a higher lustre. When comparing a small Freshwater pearl to a large South Sea pearl, the difference is clearly visible to the untrained eye and should be considered when purchasing pearls.

Shape

While pearls come in many different shapes, the rarest and highest-quality are round. Akoya, Tahitian, and South Sea oysters tend to produce the roundest pearls, while those of Freshwater mollusks can be oval to slightly off-round. When considering a pearl purchase, whether it be a necklace, bracelet, or earrings, look for consistency in the shapes of the pearls. Many of the less symmetrical shapes are used in stylish jewelry which can be quite beautiful: the drop pearl's shape lends well to earrings, and the baroque pearl features irregular shapes that work well as necklace accents. In addition, a half sphere pearl called a "mabe" is often used in earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.

Size

An oyster's particular type and size has a direct effect on how large the pearl it produces will be, and pearls do come in a wide range of sizes. Round pearls are measured according to their diameter, while baroque pearls are measured by their length and width. A pearl's size does not necessarily affect its quality, but it does affect its price. Large, round pearls are rare and their lustre is usually high--this beautiful combination of traits is often reflected in the cost of such pearls.

Average pearl sizes (in diameter):

Akoya: 6-8mm

Freshwater: 5-6.5mm

South Sea: 11-13mm

Tahitian: 11-12mm

Keshi: 4-10mm

Surface Markings

Often when an oyster creates a pearl, the nacre does not develop smoothly. The surface of a pearl is judged by how many marks are visible in the nacre. These imperfections can be small and unnoticeable or quite large and distinct. Like diamonds, pearls are rarely flawless. However, high lustre or the way pearls are strung and set can help conceal surface markings.

Care

Proper care of pearls is not difficult if you remember that they are organic and produced by a living thing. Pearls are soft and delicate, but when cared for with common sense, they will maintain their lustre for centuries. The pearls should not come in contact with cosmetics, hairspray, perfume, chlorinated water, or other harsh chemicals. To keep them clean, let them be the last item put on when dressing, and the first item taken off at the end of an evening. The best way to maintain their lustre is to wear the pearls often, and wipe them down with a soft cloth afterward--pearls absorb the oils from skin, which helps keep them moist. Pearls should be stored in a cloth pouch or jewelry bag, separated from other jewelry to prevent nicks or chipping. Periodically, pearl strands should be restrung since the silk thread used to tie the pearls together breaks down over time.

I found this necklace to be very attractive and the pearls are a perfect size and seem of be of good quality.

It is a little flimsy, very lightweight chain and the clasp is very small and a little difficult to connect, but really, It's not a piece of fine jewelry.

It reminded me of pieces for sale at your local department store, not like something you'd find at a jewelers.

This cultured pearl pendant necklace (from the AMAZON CURATED COLLECTION) is a simple, attractive piece of jewelry - but it is definitely not high-end, nor does it look like it costs as much as Amazon is charging for it (much less the quoted "list price"). The pendant itself is made up of three graduated-size cultured pearls, in shades of white, gray, and steel blue, strung together on a piece of stiff wire. The pearls are separated by tiny silver beads, and topped with a small silver ball. The pearls themselves are shiny and pretty, but there is no movement to the pendant - the pearls are static, hanging like one solid piece.

The 18-inch silver chain which comes with the pendant is very, very fine. The pearls would look much more impressive with a larger chain, and the bail (the silver ball, actually) would accommodate one with at least a little more heft. So if you end up buying this, you might want to switch out the chains. Another problem is the very cheap-looking spring ring clasp on the very fine chain, which is so tiny and difficult to operate that attaching the necklace is frustratingly difficult. Lobster claw clasps are much sturdier and easier to operate.

Overall, this is a nice looking necklace, but don't expect it to look like high-end jewelry. It reminded me of pieces for sale at your local department store, not like something you'd find at a jewelers. It's a nice enough necklace, but nothing special.

I was delighted to try this item because I own a similar piece of fine jewelry. My fine jewelry piece has 3 graduated pearls in gray, pink and pearl with diamond accents on a white gold 18K chain.

Let me tell you ... it is very difficult to tell the difference between this item and my fine piece of jewelry. Upon close inspection when comparing the two pieces, there are slight differences:

    - the pearls on my fine jewelry are more luminescent than this item,
    - the pearls are nearly a perfect round on my fine jewelry compared to these, and
    - the diamond chips on my fine jewelry add just the right touch which are missing from these (just a small, sterling ball at the bale).

However, this Amazon item is a nice piece just as it is! The pearls are substantial, and the chain is more than long enough for tall or large women. It looks like it costs much more than it actually does! Yes, there, I said it - this piece looks like it costs much more. My fine piece was a gift, purchased at Costco, I'm certain more than 200 if that gives you a benchmark.

This item would make a lovely gift, and it's available at a great price. Don't hesitate. It's surprisingly nice!

This is an attractive piece and one that would dress up a wide variety of outfits. The three pearls are opalescent white, very pale gray and a deep purplish-blue. They are on a stiff wire and move as a piece (the silver ball at the top moves separately). I agree with the reviewer who said that the pearls are so large they might be mistaken for costume jewelry: even the smallest is much larger than any of my other pearls, but they are the right size for a pendant and the piece looks pretty, well-balanced and tasteful.

My biggest reservation is the chain, which at a rather flimsy 18 inches is too long for me and perhaps too delicate for the pendant. But for a nice pendant I don't mind switching out the chain, and overall I'm happy with this piece.

This freshwater cultured pearl pendant turned out to be larger than I expected. It measures about 1 3/4" long from the sterling silver bead bale to the bottom pearl. The three baroque pearls are tightly threaded together with a wire and little silver beads are used as spacers in between the pearls. The pendant is very stiff. The 18-inch sterling silver chain is shiny but dainty. I think a thicker chain would have matched the pendant better. The pearls are very smooth but they look more like "pearl beads" than real pearls. However, the necklace may appeal to those who like pearls and a look of classic elegance. It is just that to me, the pearls appear to be a bit too costume-ish for a necklace advertised as fine jewelry because of the dye applied to them.

Note: this necklace is made in China

I love pearls. They are my birthstone and I’m always looking for unique and pretty pieces to add to my collection. I am so pleased with this pendant.

The Sterling Silver Black/Grey/White Freshwater Cultured Pearl Graduated 18” Pendant Necklace is a lovely piece of jewelry. It is part of The Amazon Curated Collection so you’re sure of getting a piece that is certified and that Amazon will stand behind your choice.

The pendant has 3 ovoid pearls of graduated size with Black, Grey and White coloration. These colors would look classy on a black, white or silver outfit. The chain is delicate silver that does not distract from the simple beauty of the teardrop pearl fall.
The instructions warn the user that “pearls should not come in contact with cosmetics, hairspray, perfume, chlorinated water, or other harsh chemicals.” They also add that “The best way to maintain their lustre is to wear the pearls often, and wipe them down with a soft cloth afterward--pearls absorb the oils from skin, which helps keep them moist.” I think the best admonishment there could ever be is to wear my pearls often.

These would be an excellent gift to a bridesmaid or to the mother of a bride or groom. They are also fitting to a young lady on her 16th birthday and bound to become a cherished heirloom. I will be wearing mine to my grandson’s upcoming wedding.
